Makes sense. Thanks Molly :)

Mark,
Molly has stated exactly why excellently. The show line breeders are very hard pressed to out-cross already. The same is going to happen with working lines, unless there is a concerted and conscious decision to at least attempt to avoid it.
I had intended never to have a dog with Fero or Crok in the pedigree. Best-laid plans, right?
I currently have an excellent bitch (only 1 yo) who is line-bred on Fero and has Crok behind her, too. LOL She is a firecracker that the helpers already love. She is monkey-smart, agile, high drive, and very social. Also the most confident pain in the ass. Assuming her hips check out (she will be xrayed for the a stamp in a couple of weeks), once she is titled, I will probably want to breed her.
Shelley,
It is a shame that more people don't recognize what we have in the Marc and Arthus lines. I have a male carrying those lines, but, unfortunately he had an injury that broke the sperm-blood barrier, so while producing sperm, he absorbs it. It can only be collected directly from the testicles and I am not willing to put him through that for my "ego" (he doesn't care ). Bottom-line is that those lines won't continue through him. :-( I sincerely hope that Shelley is able to maintain them.

If a male had Ferro 6-generations back and no Ferro line breeding, would that be getting far enough away to consider? I'm curious since in some cases Ferro is a long ways back in the pedigree for some. To me that would be getting out of the bottleneck.

Fero isn't always that far back. Then, add two dogs line-bred on Fero, and so on, and so on. Yes, he moves back, but there is still a lot of back-massing on him. Add the issue of not knowing which Fero son stood in for him at the end (several litters are recognized as Fero litters by the SV, but some of those were whelped 7-8 months after he was dead...and no AI).

Larry Filo has Snoopy vd Fasanerie and Sid vd Fasanerie-littermates. Not "Fero-Free", but if you used one of them, Fero would be quite far back...like 6 th gen. Snoopy is the sire of the bitch I'm in the process of importing. At 9 years old, his zw is 68!!!! KKL1 for life. Sid's is 72. I believe Molly Graf used Sid a couple times.

Larry is in Wisconsin. His kennel, Steinig Tal produces primarily PSDs, it appears. Nice to see GSDs still doing real work.

Our dear Gabi was bred to Snoopy Fasanerie. VERY nice litter, now about 3 years old. I know 3 of them are titled, maybe more, have to check. Nice looking dogs that hit like a ton of bricks, just like their sweet little mother.

Shelley and Molly, thanks for that positive info. I am really excited about my first breeding bitch, Capri vom Hagenberg, who is a Snoopy daughter. She just got her Sch 1 and is waiting for her show rating...though I am all but guranteed she will go "V." I was going to go meet Snoopy and Sid at Larry's but haven't gotten a chance yet. I know they are both doing very well for Larry in producing dogs for his PSD breeding/training program. It's nice to hear positive remarks about both boys; I may breed another dog to Sid one day, since Larry is close. From all I have heard from people I trust, these are great dogs.
