Another one I love is the "accredited dog trainer"s they have at those big name retail pet stores. Ever look closely at those certificates they post on the wall? They are signed by none other than the local district manager. Because, you know, a retail DM knows SO much about dog training.

I think we can all agree T Floyd is definitely a Master Trainer. Ditto Caesar Milan while we're at it. :-) Pardon me for not googling every really great trainer in the country recently to check and see what they call themselves. I'm thinking that gal with the copy-machine brochures with no address and only a cell number in all the vet hospitals around here is not in his league, ha ha ha. Ditto most of the training centers with fancy handles like Canine Education Center, K9 Learning Center, Academy for Advanced Canine Learning, Blah blah blah.

I am of the opinion that the more technical jargon employed, (Yup, read: Doggy-Psycho-babble BS) and the more "certifications" from places and organizations most of us have never heard of, the worse the actual trainer. My favorite of those BS entities is off line right now. Its a Dog Training Masters Home Study Course.  Isn't that kind of like those mail order ordinations people tried to use to get out of the draft as conscientious objectors in the 60's?

Master traininer = Expert and my father told me long ago a ex is a hasbeen and a spirt is a drip under pressure.

And as far as police having Master Trainer cert. I havent seen many police trainers i,d let  feed my dogs hotdogs. There are exceptions to that rule but those are normally running succseful clubs or competing.

IF A TRAINER IS BACKED BY A CERTIFING AGENCY AS A MASTER TRAINER THE AGENCEY HAS EITHER TRAINED THEM OR EVALUATED THEM TO THAT DEGREE.

  > As far as the rquirements to be certified a "Master Trainer" for North American Police Work Dog Association  go to their website it will explain it in detail.

>  I  do not care for the term either and I have had the privilage of working and training PSDs for 30 years now.

Wow, Bob sorry if I struck a nerve with you.  How long have you trained Police K9's?  I often enjoy reading your posts, they are usually very informative.  Please remind me how many dogs have you titled?  Have you competed at the National level?  What club are you currently running?  Forgive me if I should know this info but my memory is very short lately....  Shelley asked a question about master trainers and I responded, I didn't mean to send the thread into the "bashing zone."  No offense intended, just curious.

Jim, don't assume it's personal because if this guy knew your credentials it wouldn't be. ;) Unfortunately there are a fair share of K9 handlers who give a bad name to the rest of legit trainers. We've got one of those bozos in my home town. The world is full of idiots, and some of them are (unfortunately) under the guise of "Master Trainer". On a separate note, I am disappointed that no one has paid me to give a seminar on the finer points of poop scooping. How "small minded" the world is...

>  I'll second that!! My disagreement is it is a title given away to freely! When instructing at seminars or workshops I "always" make it a point I am an expert at nothing in my chosen field, am just offering pointers and assistance in an attempt to make your team a little more proficient!

No problem Slambunc:

I,ve never put a Sch 3 on a dog to date, a Sch 2 on  one, and Sch 1 on 2, never was a training coordibator of a club but was President of a local club for several years (whoop tee doo)  I,ve got a 7.5 year old dog with some very bad habits as far as obedience and tracking goes ( that I created) am working on a very talentted and driven 1 year old female (trying not to screw this one up)  I,ve never competed at a national level nor do I ever see my self do so It isn,t a priority for me with my dogs but i have great respect for those that do.  Now titling dogs has nothing to do about experience with dogs, Ive seen National competitors that are idiots and are using the dog only as a means of self proclamation, Ive seen geat handlers and teachers in the K9 world who are excellent at imparting knowledge and information to new handlers and never think twice about names or titles.

Now as far as the term "Master Trainer"

I,ve also never hung my dog over a rail and left him to hang and whatched a MASTER TRAINER set in court and say "well some dogs have to be handled in this manor" or "yes it is a training technique that has to be used on occasion"  or shoot my dog or abused it to the point of death or cut it off from food, water,or contact cause "thats what it takes to show them who the BOSS IS" so ya when I hear the term MASTER TRAINER it cause my ass to pucker tight because normally the ones who would profess to the world I,M A MASTER TRAINER arent qualified to be MASTER BAITERS.

Any other info requested i,d be glad to oblige
