Gretsch,
If you are trying to BUILD confidence in the dog, you should NOT be the winner, ever, in any game of tug of war, especially when the dog is young. Every single time you play he should win. As he gains confidence, then you tug harder. Eventually, when he really is confident, then it won't be so much an issue. But in general, he should be winning.
And yes, that is great that you can laugh at yourself and are not offended at those of us who laughed at your story. That shows a strong character. We have all done silly things. The comment above about the compromise of insulation of his coat probably has merit. If you have weather like I do today, the dog should not be outside anyway.....
Good luck.

he always sleeps inside. in fact, most of the time when i wake up for work, i am stareing at him in the face.
we had a severe weather warning issued, but they retracted it and said the snow would almost all completley hit to the south of us.
dang.

Gretsch I am gald you are laughing with us :) I read your story to my daughter she thought it was cute and said well mom if you are not a dog nerd person you would not know. So now I am a Dog Nerd person LOL
unless I am doing a dog show I do not bath the dogs very often. I will however take a wet wash cloth and clean the face and the body to get and yuck off of them. And like people shamppo I do not spend alot but on the conditioner I spend way more for a good one (Mr Groom you get a lot for the buck!)
(You could always add red vinger with salt and peper to taste LOL sorry it just hit me :)

i took him to the dog park today... i was surprised at how many people were there with their dogs, given the weather. oh boy was he ever a popular pup.
the problem seems to be working itself out though.
i would try the vinegar, but the salt and pepper might hurt his skin.

If you want to add an oil to his food try flaxseed oil, you can even give it to him in human grade caplets. The things that come out of pet store employee's mouths never ceases to amaze me. The whole thing is pretty damn funny, though.

Thanks so much for sharing! Your story really brought a smile. Especially this part:
"plus now when i pet him... my hands get oily.
i looked online after i did this... apparently giving the oil in their FOOD is what is suppossed to help their coats."
ROFLMAO!
I bet he WAS popular at the dog park. I can see all the other dogs wanting to smell and lick him! They were probably asking him how he got his human to use that particular shampoo.

The Shine on a Dogs coat comes from its health with in the Dog its self
You cannot put it there by putting something on the coat, It is False
Look to the feeding of your Dog, and what you give it
ONE; thing i will tell you, an overfed Dog is not an healthy Dog and its coat will certainly show it
Post a photo of your Dog for us to see
