Racing QH- your dogs were both beautiful. And you were a really pretty child, as well, 'tho I think I see a twinle of mischief in those eyes!

Why is it that those 1st dogs stick in our minds & hearts? I cried when I found that picture....jh

Sunsilver

When I was growing up, my parents wouldn't let me have a dog, because my brother was allergic. During my young adult years, I was living in apartments which wouldn't let you have pets, and I moved frequently. Not a good time to adopt a dog. When I was in my early 30's, I saw this pathetic looking bag of bones lying underneath the table in my uncle's farm kitchen. She was 5 years old, 26" tall, and weighed 35 lbs. She also had pannus, and was partially blind. I knew if I left her there, she was going to die. I took her home, to the 11th floor of a high rise, and she adjusted very well. As soon as she knew she was loved and cared for, she began to eat and gain weight. Eventually, I got her up to a normal weight for a dog of her size (65-70 lbs.) Here's what she looked like after I'd had her for a few years:

I never did find out anything about what her breeding was, but a former breeder said she looked to be a mix of English and American lines. She was a calm, gentle, very dignified lady, and didn't have much of a watch dog instinct. She was a fast learner, and I wish I'd been able to get a PEN for her, as she did very well in obedience. Alas, there was no such thing as a PEN number back then (same as the AKC ILP, so purebred dogs without papers can do performance events.)

What a beautiful lady! Thank goodness you found her, or she found you! jh

Thanks, Jackie! Unfortunately, our time together was rather short. She developed ankylosing spondylitis in her spine, and had to be euthanized at the age of 9 because she couldn't walk anymore.

Great pictures everyone!  What a great topic to start Jackie.  I thought a lot more would have jumped on board.  Come on everyone, lets see your first GSD pup, or dog!
