What age do male youngsters start to 'cock their leg'? - Page 2

Mine was about a year old.  And obviously I'm easily entertained because it would crack me up during the "balance" transition...    reminded me of a toddler learning to walk..lol.  He sometimes will accidently pee on his front leg  when there isn't a bush or tree to run interference....LOL

Any time between 7 weeks and never ...........

I don't think there is an age limit on this and each dog is different in a way, but mainly it is about marking .

When the dog is old enough he will start marking territory, if there is another male in the area they will mark over each other's spot,  sometime's it may be on the ground and other times on something vertical.   A post or tree, something of that nature.  The higher the mark the more need to aim high...LOL

I was told once to let my dog be around an older male to learn this..... BS!    It's something the dog will do out of necessity to cover a spot off of the ground.   He will figure it out.

angus is nearly 2 1/2 yrs now and he has never lifted his leg or squatted. he just sort of stretches out and pees. he does on occasion pee on a front foot, but, from what others have posted, males seem to do this no matter how they pee LOL. personally, i'm just as happy with him NOT lifting his leg. btw, angus was neutered at 11 months.

shepherd woman - congrats on your new addition in february! i have been aching for a puppy, but husband says no. he won't let me have chickens either. maybe when he retires in a couple of years.... and one of my next birthday presents (this friday) is a staple gun! (i did ask for it , serves me right - i shoulda asked for a puppy!)

Thanks, I'm looking very forward to my new addition.  Will be totally different to have a working line male in along with my pet GSD's and my show male.  The new addtion will be showing also but I know will have a lot of spunk too.  Something we are not use to , lol.  All of my dogs are really laid back.  Can't wait to see what happens :- }

We have males and really none of them lift their leg on a regular basis.  They'll do it to mark a tree now and again, but I've never had a male that did it all the time.  I actually prefer them not to as you do get the pee on the front leg-syndrome and my one male teeters a lot trying to balance himself.  If they lift their leg, they tend not to fully eliminate so they'll have to pee a few times.  Just a stand and semi-squat gets the event over quicker!

One of my pups started at 6 months....Beckett didn't start lifting until he was nearly 2 years old....every once in a while he'll still squat, & always looks back over his shoulder at me to see if I'm noticing, LOL, & gets this embarrased look on his face face if I catch him-----busted!---- it'll be a long time, if ever, before we test your theory, Mathaus, but now I'm curious! Anyone else noticed that? jackie harris

Ozzy, my 2 year old Shepherd has never hiked up his leg......he somewhat stretches out and pisses.  Yogi, my one year old will stretch out to pee also,  but on ocassions will slightly lift his leg....very slightly.  Either way,  pee is still coming out.

Dogs who do not cock their legs are fussy maters.

I know of two very successful and prolific studs that do not cock their legs, ever............

My male that's almost 2 I've only caught a few times lifting his leg.  He does one of those 1/2 assed pees with the squat off to the side and just a little lifting of the leg.  I think he's just lazy! lol
