OT-US election-an outsider's opinion - Page 2

I do agree that you have very good reasons for rooting for Obama. (sarcasm).

Seriously though.  I don't know much about the UK, I admit.  So I have a serious question.  I was watching CNN the other day and when discussing world opinion concerning our election here, one pundit made the statment the the UK is just one notch away from socialism.

What did he mean by that?  I really would like to know, as I thought you all were pretty much like our system of government.  I just love watching your parliament in action.  How they stand up and shout "here, here, here" and "boo", and how they actually get to ask questions of your Prime Minister out in the open.  And how Tony Blair used to put them in their places when they were wrong.  He was quick witted and one of my favorite politicians.

Do you have univeral health care supplied by the govenrment?  What is your tax rate for someone making less that 250K a year?  Is abortion legal if the life of the mother is not in jeopardy?

I would really lkie to know from an average citizen, and not from some talking head on TV or some radical internet site.

Good for the anti-hunting thing.  So am I.  Big time.  I also hate guns, but find them a necessary evil (as is hunting sometimes) to make sure that if our government or the thief next door, tries any funny business.  That we have a means of changing their or his mind.

Abortion is legal within so many (sorry not sure how many) weeks of pregnancy.

"Free" healthcare... well all us workers pay every month (no choice) National Health Ins and it's earnings related (Thanks to Mrs Thatcher) so... the more you earn, the more you pay!

Socialism in the UK... not likely to be widespread... we're too greedy!

Okay.  Thanks missbeeb.  You don't seem too happy with the cost of your "free" health care, nor the cost of your taxes.  25 to 33% is kind of high for those who are not rich (under 250K).  I am not sure how your dollars compare with ours, but still kinda high.  Sounds like Obama is going to be right in line with what you have there, on those particular issues.

I'm no fan of fox hunting... what did Oscar Wilde say?  "The pursuit of the uneatable by the unspeakable."  Sums it up for me!  However, I would have compromised... no digging out, if the fox escapes, and it often does, no Terriers to be used... the fox wins the day.  I think this mainly because of the other knock on effects ie hounds, hunters, (horses) saddlers, farriers and so on.  The drag hunting seems to be doing ok.
