Way to go.... *S*    That's what Shepherds are about... protection and playing with the baby on the same day...

Frequently even a GSD not from working line can be very protective.

My American showline girl shows a lot of natural protective instinct as well.

One day , a neighbor of mine, whom she doesn't know well, and I were just standing behind the double wide glass slide door that leads to my yard. My neighbor playfully touched my head. This dog charged without hesitation from 30 feet away, shaking the glass.

I was rather surprised by this generally shy and aloof dog. She is very kind to animals, however. Even strange little dogs that strayed into my yard are welcome.

These dogs are our right arms and give total commitment to their families.  It never ceases to amaze me the sacrifice these dogs make for humanity with only a pat or "good dog" for a reward.

One of my stud's pups recently placed herself between an alligator and her owner's children.  What more can you breed for?

Hopefully the idiot attacker doesn't sue her for damages from the bites if/when he gets caught since he will have to get antibiotics for the bites from somewhere.  Michigan is a "strict liability" state but it does have provisions for criminals and idiots who torment dogs (thank goodness).  I am not sure of the laws in her state but Gracie should definately get a steak or three!!!! Here is the Michigan law and it was changed to allow for protecting the owner since a woman was sued from prison by her rapist (after his conviction) because he suffered severe bite trauma.  The victim's rotti mix pulled that rapist off her while he was raping her and held on till the police arrived.  Poor man has suffered great emotional trauma along with his bite and is having PTSD. Poor baby.  Believe it or not, he won. Now we have this:

287.351 Person bitten by dog; liability of owner.

Sec. 1.

(1) If a dog bites a person, without provocation while the person is on public property, or lawfully on private property, including the property of the owner of the dog, the owner of the dog shall be liable for any damages suffered by the person bitten, regardless of the former viciousness of the dog or the owner's knowledge of such viciousness.

(2) A person is lawfully on the private property of the owner of the dog within the meaning of this act if the person is on the owner's property in the performance of any duty imposed upon him or her by the laws of this state or by the laws or postal regulations of the United States, or if the person is on the owner's property as an invitee or licensee of the person lawfully in possession of the property unless said person has gained lawful entry upon the premises for the purpose of an unlawful or criminal act.

As used in this act:

(a) “Dangerous animal” means a dog or other animal that bites or attacks a person, or a dog that bites or attacks and causes serious injury or death to another dog while the other dog is on the property or under the control of its owner. However, a dangerous animal does not include any of the following:

(i) An animal that bites or attacks a person who is knowingly trespassing on the property of the animal's owner.

(ii) An animal that bites or attacks a person who provokes or torments the animal.

(iii) An animal that is responding in a manner that an ordinary and reasonable person would conclude was designed to protect a person if that person is engaged in a lawful activity or is the subject of an assault.

(iv) Livestock.

(b) “Livestock” means animals used for human food and fiber or animals used for service to human beings. Livestock includes, but is not limited to, cattle, swine, sheep, llamas, goats, bison, equine, poultry, and rabbits. Livestock does not include animals that are human companions, such as dogs and cats.

(c) “Owner” means a person who owns or harbors a dog or other animal.

(d) “Provoke” means to perform a willful act or omission that an ordinary and reasonable person would conclude is likely to precipitate the bite
