Heart problems can cause this sort of coughing. This is probably well beyond what a regular vet can handle. The dog needs to see an internal medicine specialist or a cardiologist. If it were my dog, I'd get a chest X-ray and echocardiogram as soon as possible. Good luck with him.

I haven't noticed cases of kennel cough that last more than a week typically. My dogs have rarely coughed more than a couple of days. It doesn't seem like it would be a secondary infection if the dog was put on antibiotics? I would be concerned that this is something else and probably want a second opinion also...
will you keep us posted and update if anything new happens with vet visits, etc?

I am curious, Ellen. Did he have a kennel cough shot or one of the intra nasal vaccinations and when did he receive it?
I'm sure the cultures and sensitivities your vet is doing is the right way to diagnoss your dog. All he needs is the right antibiotic or, if it's a virus, it will just take time. Good luck with him.

Thanks for that information. If this were my dog, I'd not give him another intra nasal vaccine. My first GSD developed a chronic sinus problem after he received one. Since your dog had that vac way back in April it probably didn't have anything to do with the current problem, but I'd still not allow him to have another. In fact, I don't vaccinate against kennel cough at all anymore. If it turns out that your dog has a viral infection, it could mean that he will now be immune to some of the viruses that can cause kennel cough. Also, no one vaccine prevents all varities of this disease and the vaccinations are not effective for much longer than 6 months.

What about a fungal infection? Some of them affect the lungs and create upper respiratory type symptoms. Best of luck, please let us know how he does.
