habanaro

We have had another with a mix breed do an fh at our club... I do know of some folks that have worked the standard poodles, My sister in law had some nice airdales.. It really kinda goes to what you like  There will need to be some  things  that you may need to alter for the dog but really you need to do that anyway just with differnet dogs of the same breed.  Really the test says more about the nerves of the dog.  If your  enjoy your dog and it can do the work go for it..

The reason I was asking, and I stumbled on this quite accidently. I was doing some rag and tug work with my shepherds last night and left the rag outside on the ground in the fron yard. I took the lab, who is from the field trial lines and is in training as an Accelerant Detection K9, out to go potty. I walked her to her usual spot and on our way back inside she spotted the rag and grabbed it. I was just messing around and tried to take it from her. Holy crap was I surprised!! She's got more fight and prey drive then a whole lot of the shepherds I've seen. I could not for the life of me get that rag back. She had the whole thing stuffed in the back of her mouth and had a death grip on it. And she LOVED it. Lol. I can say that she's got pretty bad aim. Once I did get it from her I got her wired up a bit and when she came in for the bite she missed and bit my leg. Was not on purpose but it still hurts and leaves a big bruise.

I was just curious as to how many have actually gone "all the way" with a lab.

Thanks again,

Melissa

Melissa,

Prey drive is prey drive.  I would think if you raised a high prey drive dog of any breed to do the work, then they could do the work.

I know of Chessies who could more than do the work, as well as some Weimies.

I just want to know, Bob, how did the Corgi get the big ass dumbbell over the wall?  That would have been a riot to see!

I have thought of working my 7 yr old Min. Schnauzer in Schutzhund.  He loves to "attack", however, he never actually puts his teeth into you....but, he has some prey drive, so.....

On the flip side of that coin, years ago, I had a Rottie that my uncle "stole" from me....She was a coon hunting fool.  He had a kennel in Southern IL, and raised Red Bones and Blue Tics.  He competed....he took Nala, the Rottie, and was hunting with her at trials!  She did great.  Loved it.

The prey drive is all good and well, if you are rewarding a dog for working with the tug, toy, etc.... All of the Accelerant dogs that come through here are strictly food reward.

Also, for being a breed of dog known for a soft mouth, she does not conform. I would compare her wackiness to that of a malinois. Mile a minute and never stops.

Thank you all for your input.

There's a chick I've trained with that titled a lab mix to TR1 and OB1. In the "Advanced SchH" book there's photos of a black Lab named Shadow that is described as one of the few SchH3 Labs. A good dog is a good dog. In one of the recent SchH USA magazine's there was a short article on a lady with a SchH1 German Shorthaired Pointer. Whatever works, baby. Yvette

Here is a quickie video of my old man doing a little bitework.  He was around 9 in this video and I pulled him out of retirement to test out my new camera (had not been on a sleeve in over 18 months).  Not as impressive as most GSDs and Malis but he sure loves to do it..  He is an ACD and he has a SchH A.  I had to retire due to a reoccurring shoulder injury he got weight pulling as a youngster:
