Yes, that's most likely it. It's the Mal that they are trying to improve. They want to make it "pretty".
For me, the argument that I find most alarming when the discussion turns to mal vs gsd is anything surrounding "beauty". In my opinion, both dogs are utility dogs. The best conformation is based on how the dog should work, not whether or not it's "pretty". I think the dog that can't work is ugly.
The other thing that I think is strange is when people have no problem with the fact that on average Malis wipe the floor with GSDs in the sport of schutzhund. There is something wrong when the average GSD can't keep up with the average Mali in a sport designed for GSDs.
Of course, I realize this is just my opinion and not everybody feels the same way. I think there is room for all of us. Beauty is definetely in the eye of the beholder!

No a GSD could never have Mal in it and have papers...................
all those guys in Belgium and Holland that do this should be shot on sight. They are destroying the breed

Rumor always had it that Link Muikenshof was part mal. I would think that part of the reason that you would do a mal cross is that Mals rarely have bad hips and are not prone to many of the problems that are associated with german shepherds. Something to be said about hybrid vigor! There is mal mixed in with alot of the Belgium dogs that ARE registered! Just look at some of them and how fine boned they are and how little and pointy their muzzels are, hell some could drink right out of a coke bottle! LOL

Well Nia, I thought you were an educated GSD fancier. I was soooo wrong. The reason the Belgian GSDs have narrow heads and poor conformation is not because there is a “Mal in the woodpile”. The reason the dogs look like that is because of poor breeding practices. It is that simple. If the Belgians followed proper breeding practices proscribed by the SV they would have correct GSDs with proper conformation. And to fill you in, because it is very apparent that you don’t know, a correct GSD is deep red with lustrous black markings. His side gait is far reaching and strong. No Malinois looks like that does it?
Sue, there are only two reasons that Mals beat the GSDs at the big trials. One, the best dogs are working on their show careers and can’t afford to get hurt or get broken teeth. Two, the best dogs are saving themselves for the BSP and WUSV. Is called capping a dog. Have you ever heard of it? Dogs only have so many trials in them so you don’t waste them doing Malinois trials!
Vicky, you want to know another word for hybrid? Mutt! And if you want a mutt you should go to the pound and get all you want. But please for Max’s sake please leave the GSD alone.

I do not like seeing gsd/mal or ds/mal mix. A few in to litter will go to working homes the rest get to go to the shelter. Then pet owners do not know what they are getting into. They also think that stripe dogs sell for more money. In my opinion bad news all the way around. You start getting into quantity instead of quality. There are so many nice dogs out there.

That made me spew coffee all over my keyboard. I will be laughing about the above statement for a good portion of the day. Thank you!

Dee, thanks for pointing that out. I missed that comment. That is a funny one.
So I guess my sable GSD with moderate rear angulation is.... a COYOTE! Har har har.

Chris you funny. :)

You just wait Christopher, trials have been unfairly geared towards Malis. Very soon the rules will be changed, higher points will be awarded for slinking dogs because they are not in avoidance but really stealthy and those so dominant they will mark territory rather than waste time gripping a silly decoy.
