Even tennis balls can kill. I used to have a link to a story by a guy whose golden nearly choked to death when a tennis ball lodged in its throat. Luckily, he was able to remove it once the dog lost consciousness. When he took the dog to the vet afterwards, the vet complimented him, and said most dogs who choke on tennis balls are dead by the time he sees them. He also said it happened quite frequently, especially with retrievers, and other dogs who like to play fetch!

Who would have thought, eh?

My dogs are never allowed to play with balls by themselves.  Balls are too high value, I want that game to always be associated with me, never alone.  They have other toys, but balls and tugs, nooooooo waaaaaay by themselves EVER!!

Sueincc,

Exactly what I was trying to say!  The ball is a favorite toy and it is MY BALL but I let them play with me and MY BALL!

I don't use tenns balls period (my dogs can pop them in half in about 15 seconds) and also do not leave dogs unattended with balls for throwing. That is for training time only.

Balls are too high value

this can be taken so many different ways sue! lol

i never allow my dogs to have any toy unless we are playing together.  that goes for chew bones and the like.

i do find it interesting that people who train and work dogs all know this, yet the majority of pet owners havent a clue.

I have working dogs, and they get to have their chew toys and their kongs to keep them statisfied, I use a tug for training so this makes the difference I suppose.

I didn't think tennis balls were good for a dog anyhow.  Supposedly, the glue on the ball is bad for the dogs enamal on the teeth.

RESPONSE LETTER FROM FOUR PAWS  (In reference to "boycott" letter provided in the blog by the owner of the poor dog that got his tongue stuck....the link provided by KariM. )(I'm sure that besides me, there were a lot of them sent in!  So here it is for what it's worth....)

Thank you for your recent note expressing concern over the Four Paws® Pimple Ball with Bell. We were equally alarmed to learn that a dog may have injured himself while playing with this toy.

Dogs have been enjoying the Pimple Ball with Bell for more than a decade with over 500,000 units sold.  In all the years this product has been on the market, this is the first injury of this nature that we are aware of.  Unfortunately, accidents sometimes happen.  That’s why we recommend that dogs always be supervised when they are playing with any toy.  We take great care in developing safe products for pets and their owners.

At this point we have identified the problem and are not shipping any more Pimple Balls.  We have contacted customers that carry this product and have asked them to immediately return their inventory.
