This discussion is not intended to end up in bashing PPD trainers, or sch3 that wont bite.
One of my thaughts behind the original post is how many people have purchased a puppy from titled parents who have never seen the dogs work? So they are relying on paperwork. What if PPD had to be tested like PSA/SDA and so on would that bring more credibility to the PPD world or would that just become corrupt also? What do you think?

"pedigree will (once again) only take you so far. look at the parents. dont be fooled by handlers telling you how good their dog is. it is hard for new people to understand what it is they should be looking for. hope you can find an educated person to help them decide."
Oh John, that was a shot to the heart. This green handler thought she really had something! You just shot my dreams to shit.

A lot of PPD dogs are so bite happy no one but an experienced handler would want one.
The price they want for one with that kind of training, kinda is not really worth it to the normal family or business owner..He wouldnt know what to do with it anyway. ONly another department or LEO looking for same would pay that kind of price.
Home protection does not need a ppd dog to guard it or the people in it. A well trained shepherd is worth more than one that has had training beat into it on a table or in a kennel or ppd situation..WHy would I spend 12,000.00 for that much experise of training to guard my 150,000.00 home and two kids and a wife??

I would go for a Stable PPD dog anyday over a celebrity SCH titled dog.

the difference is that if you are SCH 3 then its like going to Harvard for your PHD and if you are a PPD you have hit the books on your own and burnt the midnght oil in you own small shelter:)

It's a silly question to start with in my opinion.
Most important to me is the term working dog. We will agree to disagree on this one.
Second, training is time and money regardless of what your taining for. More training is more money.
Also figure in quality of that training.
Harvard and midnight oil make no sense Vikram, apples and oranges.

Any puppy is a gamble, it doesn't matter if it has the absolute best pedigree in the world. You increase your odds by seeing what the parents/grandparents etc have done and can do but you still won't know for that paticular pup. Puppy testing helps but they can change based on environment also.
A lot of PPD's being sold to people are really nothing but a deterent, many would cut and run at the first sign of trouble. But for many all they really do need is a deterent. There are some true PPD's also, that a family can handle and count on. There are also the ones over the top. There are no guidelines over what qualifies as a PPD (this has been discussed extensively here).
If there was true guidelines and testing for PPD that would at least give people a starting point. However, sad as it would be, the testing for that would probably end up the same as other areas. Some actually earning the ratings, others not.......
