Do not ever cover a tick with oil to remove it- that will make the tick regugitate into its host, and spread disease more forcefully. The use of a tick spoon is a much better and safer way to remove a tick- never, ever smother a tick to get it to release- thats just asking for trouble :(

Rainhaus,

Just ask for three in one oil at a hardware store, it has a small tip for dispensing one drop at a time, multi purpose.

I promise the tick wont puke.  Beside's the nastiest part of a tick is on the outside.

Pass the chilled semen please, then sign me up for the support group.

--- >Gsd's have become pets and so many  in each state..need rescue. If you were to place the same amount of energy into doing so..I think you would be a happier person.

actually, I am extremely active in rescue. :) I have lost count of the amount of dogs I have gotten pulled from shelters and transported to safety, and to their new homes. I could wallpaper my large office with their pictures and have pictures left to spare for other rooms:) I even forced a shelter to close that was keeping their dogs in abhorrant conditions, so, I am quite the happy camper!

-- >I was booted off of your site because I was truthful...including the aspect of horses

actually, you were booted off my site because it was a GSD health list, and you did nothing but talk about horses, no matter how many private messages I sent you asking that you refrain from posting about horses, since it was GSD list, not a horse list, since everyone was complaining to me about your many off topic posts.

If you want to put oil on a tick, be my guest. However, I suggest you check out the NIH sites and the tick group sites for proper methods on how to remove a tick.   Its not dangerous because I said so- iit s dangerous because it is a FACT that a tick will regurgitate into the host, when smothered, and that the tick will still have enough oxygen left to complete its feeding, allowing tick borne diseases to be transmitted, but, hey- do it your way- no skin off my back, just another fur kid that will bite the dust :(

Do not try to smother the tick by covering it with petroleum jelly or nail polish.

Here we go again, can't even have a polite conversation about something as mundane as removing a tick from a dog's ear without trashing someone. This time it's a woman who has done more for this breed than all of us combined, Marjorie.  Way to go!!!

Just pull the damned tick off the dog using either your fingers, a tweezer of some gadget made especially for that purpose, a tick spoon.  Tick spoons were invented for people who are squeamish about touching ticks, necessity is the mother of invention.  When your vet finds a tick on a dog, what do you think he does behind closed doors? He pulls it off with is fingers or a hemostat and smashes it just like Two Moons says he does or he kills it by dropping it into a bottle of alcohol or formalin. Why does it matter what variety it is. Maybe it's a mutant tick that resulted from a mother to son mating.  Ticks breed indescriminately all the time and we  know inbreeding always produces freaks. It's a tick. Analysis paralysis at it's finest....welcome to Jurasic Park.
