The best thing to avoid this happening is to make sure you have some type of clip on the latch so it can not pop open. I know some people have cattle prods near by just in case a fight ever breals out. You won't catch me trying to break up any fight. Like Hodie said, hopefully a lesson learned.

I have two bitches if they ever got out together again I would try the hose and pick up pieces later. The latches on the Preifert kennels cannot spin like on chain link kennels, part of the reason I picked them.
Good of you not to let AC and others know where this happened. I hope you heal well!

Only 8 bites? I hope you're on some strong bacterial-infection-fighting antiboitics.

ocoey- bitches are notorious for being more intense in a fight when there are two. Of course that's just a generality.
Ghost, I'm glad you got patched up. I'm sure you know this but be sure to look for any thin red lines leading from the bites.
I think most people would have intervened in some way. Me, I'll take my chance using methods I know have worked for me instead of having my dogs torn to bits.
Very nice you didn't "give up" the owners to AC.
Best of luck,
Dawgs

This is why my kennels or gates have a couple of cut off log chains wrapped around the bar of part of the kennel wal beside the door, and the first bar of the door, with a lock put into it. I've had a similar experience and went out and got a few of them after that. Never happened again.

Thanks everyone for all the comments, I am going over there to fix her runs so this doesn't happen. I had to do the same thing here. As I had a male that would do the same thing and spin the latch and out he came. Since then we haven't had this problem. The main thing is that both female are ok and won't get in any trouble over this ordeal. As for me I will heal and have learned what not to do in the future. I never have felt the helpless feeling like that before.

I went through a similar incident with my two intact males, my houdini got out of his kennel (previous post and I got some wonderful advice thank you all), and went after my big male who has a bad habit of giving the evil eye (yes I learned about that little challenging action on my big male's part from another trainer friend). I got caught in the corner and am yelling at my son to grab the smaller one by the back legs while I grab the bigger one's. That darn hyper speed that dogs have, next thing you know I was sporting big holes in my forearm. The canines went into my arm top and bottom, to the dog's gum line and the tooth marks could be seen on the x-ray of my forearm radius (bone going to the thumb). Evening in the ER, IV antibiotics for 6 days and oral for many days later. The next two days hurt like a mother hubbard. ER staff was impressed with the size of the wounds and I have wonderful scars.
One thing to avoid the first year of any new scars is direct sunlight. Keep them protected from the sun and they fade much quicker and become lighter very fast. If they get sun burned, you are going to have bad scars especially if you are fair skinned like I am.
