Hodie, he definitely told me low white blood cells. I'll address it when we go in Monday. Maybe he made a mistake in his explanation? She get's 1/8 of a teaspoon daily of Tylan, split into 2 doses. I do not know anything about this drug, what can you tell me about it? I was not told anything about not letting it touch me...if I was I would not put it in her body, loose stool or not!

I called my co-worker about her dog, she thought it was strange too but feels her dog's seizure was due to something else. We do work at a boarding/training kennel so they are very aware of making everything they use dog safe. They use a bleach dilution on all floors. I think that aspect is just a very strange coincidence.

The bug spray I used near the pup's crate (she was not in it at the time!) was Deep Woods Off. I mop with a "green", all natural pet-safe floor cleaner. I thought I cleaned that area thoroughly but perhaps I didn't.

Blitzen, no flea collars. I'm actually paranoid of monthly preventatives, too, and I use an all natural topical spray.

Here's another idea...she goes swimming in a small, clean private lake a few blocks from home. Could she have picked up an illness or ingested something dangerous there? It's a stretch, I think it more likely she got into something under the deck.

I'm going to go look up info on tylan, thanks everyone for all the great ideas. I really need to get to the bottom of this.

I know you said it was a small clean lake, but I would be checking for blue green algae at this time of year depending on where you are.  wouldn't a virus make the white blood cells go down and a bacterial infection make them rise?

I'm glad you were able to get her to your regular vet, and happy she is doing so much better.  We will keep her in our prayers, please keep us posted.

She ate, I was thrilled to see her actually hungry. Just a cup or so with yogurt and pumpkin (no tylan). She wolfed it down, tried to play with the other dogs and her toys a bit, and now she's back to sleep at our feet.  Gonna sleep out on the couch tonight so she can sleep by me.

I looked up tylan online, I cant find any any dangers related to it. Hodie, I'd love any info you have!

If an infection has been present for a while in the body, the white count may be low, due to the body using them too quickly to replenish them...but I'm sure your vet would have then found an abnormally high amount of immature white cells, & most likely would have commented about this.....unless they did not do a differential. So glad she's on the mend. jh

 KCzaja,

Provide your private email address and I will email you the information on Tylan powder. And once you read it, then we can discuss it. I don't think it is implicated and it is used in dogs a lot. However, it is not approved for use in dogs and the warnings on the label specifically tell people to handle it and not get it on their skin, inhale it etc. Most vets don't know this or if they do, don't heed it.

Chlorine bleach is not likely a culprit here either. Something is going on internally with the bloodwork being off. I would like to see all the values to see what was and was not done if you ever feel like emailing that. For now, so far, so good. Let's hope it stays this way.

 KCzaja,

I emailed you information sheets on tylan powder. Tylan is often used in the way you are using it with very good results. However, just so you know, it is not approved for use in dogs. It is used principally in birds and swine. None the less, it is thought, in animals, to have a high margin of safety.

What people often do not know is that it is considered a severe sensitizer. What this means is that people who are exposed to it through getting it on the skin or inhaling it can develop serious allergic reactions. So people should be very, very careful with it and not spill it around or get it on their skin. I know some people try to put it in capsules, for example, and doing this, without the use of gloves is probably likely to end in skin exposure. Will all people develop an allergy? Probably not, but I have yet to hear anyone realize this is a possibility.

I also have seen some literature that suggests that in some dogs antibiotics of the same class as tylosin (macrolides) and including tylosin, can cause seizures. This is not widely reported and likely was NOT the cause of the seizure your dog had. But it is worth keeping in the back of your mind. Of course, many dogs have seizures that end up being labeled "idiopathic", because the exact cause is unknown. I would have to know the blood work results in total, but given what you have said so far, I would bet on an infection or some other definable cause.

I hope the pup is on the mend.

Thanks, Hodie, I appreaciate the info. I need to reinstall my scanner, when I do, I'll scan the paperwork they gave me. I don't know what any of it means. The vet did specifically mention low potassium and low sodium. I have taken her off the tylan for now and I am switching her food.

Boudica is in very high spirits, and her appetite is great. But I am worried about a relapse if there is something poisoning her that I don't know about.
