I agree with Debi that the breed is not in ruins. In fact it seems to be getting stronger with alot of very good breeders that in my opinion offset the inferior breeding that takes place. I think many of the smaller breeders are making a positive impact too because they have access to many excellent dogs for their breeding program.  Every day I see many excellent bred litters being posted for sale, true some are not that good but many are.

Debi- I agree about the desire and ego part, but you forgot about having the MONEY to compete on that kind of level! And the time, and a boss that lets you take off work, unless you're independently wealthy and don't have to work. Travel and training don't come free.

Get a few titles under your belt Brit, and you'll understand where we're coming from.

I think that your ideas are good in theory, but how practical is it? It takes a lot of time, effort, training, and money to prepare a dog (& handler) to compete at the Nationals. Similarly, most dogs hoping to go VA or even high V (at least in Germany) spend a lot of time effort, training, and money campaigning at shows before the Sieger Show. Surely its possible for a very committed dog and handler to do both, but how can you expect all dogs? KCzaja, I definitely agree with you about noch zugelassen hips and elbows. The GSD still has such huge problems with dysplasia we need to do everything we can to eliminate the genetic factors behind it.
