TWO MOONS,

No,  you are correct, I am not qualified to judge anyone.  This guy might be the nicest person we've ever met.  However, Heritage states here:

"As far as the age of my dam and sire...well your ignorance has shown through again. When you become more educated " not opinionated " we can talk again. Just because some of you have had several litters of pups certianly doesn't make you an expert on the reproduction system "

"But I known of some of the finest GSD's that have come from a bitch 1 to 11/2 year olds."

Now in all honesty, Who of you would be willing to breed your female at 1 year?  If heritage was more willing to listen to what people are saying, but he is set in being right and all of us wrong, so this thread is a waste of good typing skills.

4pack

by 4pack on 12 July 2008 - 19:07

Thanks lvr2 I had your Million Dollar Bitch in mind when I was typing.

I'm one of those unfortunates that hasn't the $ to buy already proven dogs and I have to start from the ground up with pups. Could take years, might never happen but I wont breed my dogs, until I have the right ones and things squared away with those dogs. Anything less is insulting to great breeders and isn't doing the breed any favors. I find it interesting how our American society thinks we are all worthy. Just because we can, doesn't mean we should. I could probably steal a car, but it would be a crime. I could also breed lesser dogs, that isn't a crime.... but maybe it should be.

 I thought so 4 pack

When/if the time comes for you to breed, you'll do the right thing. And you are right again that breeding low quality dogs is insulting to good breeders and it hurts the breed.

Yup it's insulting to me, and I'm not even a breeder! My dog is better than allot of the dogs I see pumping out pups, but until I can prove that with a title or other ways, that's just my "opinion". I love these websites everyone has, all the dogs are top quality and pups suitable for PPD, Sch, PSA, Show and SAR. How is that, when the parents are non of those?

by heritage on 12 July 2008 - 20:07

well thank you everyone for youy feed back. and yes  Keycat, I have seen the animal shelters and worked in that feild for several years. I am very aware of the abuse and neglect, have seen it first hand.  I do not breed dozens of puppies and I am very selective to who will recieve my pups. I have already turned down two people so far. I do have a real problem with people who want a puppy...but don't want a dog!   And  4pack, I do understand the purchase of a good dog to enter into your breeding stock, and I too pay vet bills and yes there is a great deal of money to be made here. When some one is having 10,12 15 litters a year and selling the pups for several/couple thousand dollars each....sorry, I am educated enough to do the math..... Like I have stated earlier, I am not in this for the $  I really love the GSD!    So more on a positive note, I am not a professional breeder and I'm not ignorant niether, I'm always looking for more knowlegde. And  Two moons, your right there. I seen another gentlemen concerned here for  his puppy not gaining wieght, and some  people brought  it  right  to the edge of bashing this poor guy and he was just to here for some  knowledge. . So it is sad that we have so many great GSD ethusiast, some of which may very well be here, and yet this much bashing goes on. Oh by the way, my dogs will be certified  when age permits. And in the future you people who concider yourselfs experts should be educating the ignorant not only will it make them better owners, but the GSD will be much better off also....beating some one up will only turn them away and they will continue thier bad practices and bad ownership.

what happens if your dogs are not "certified when age permits"?  What if you get the elbows and hips x-rayed and lo and behold, you didn't have x-ray vision before you decided to breed before checking, and their hips/elbows are bad?  Not suitable for breeding?  Or, something else doesn't pass muster for breeding - but it's too late, because you already bred!  Too bad for puppies and their owners, right?  Because you were in a hurry to breed your one year old female because you know what's best and you have 30 years experience and you know she "will pass certification when age permits?"  Right?

Very frustrating and sad for those of us who think breeding should be for the BREED.  You know, like breeding for better dogs?  Guess you don't know.  Or just don't care.

Heritige I looked at your website if Sandy Hill is your kennel   ( if not   then disregard the following )  breeding dogs at age 1 year and I see no OFA certification on your stud . You refer to the dogs in their pedigree to be OFA and OFAEL   .  Sure does not look like a good breeding program  .

wouldn't you agree that certifications MUST be done  at the very very least .  I have been in the sport and German Shepherds for 25 years  and I can not  with all the expirience  100% say  any of my dogs are free of dysplasia until I see that xray  ,  you claiming other breeders are in for the money because they have invested thousands of dollars in breeding stock   or on training their stock .   I have to be honest looking at your web site     you have not even spend the money for x-ray certifications  nor preliminary xrays not have you given that puppy of yours time to mature before breeding  .  I see not even a AKC obedience title nor a CGC ... NOTHING .  So judging by the information provided by you on your web site you have not invested more then food and vaccine  so     you stated your not in for the money   so what is the purpose of this litter ??

"Like I have stated earlier, I am not in this for the $  I really love the GSD"

If you really do love the breed, than what's wrong with waiting until your bitch has matured a bit and you have done all the testing?  She's just a baby yet!  You are putting more stress on her joints by breeding her while she is still developing.

I'm one of the "idiots" that has spent thousands on a titled brood bitch.  First two heats, she didn't take.  3rd try she did take and then needed a c-section. I ended up with 7 live pups.   I GAVE two of the best pups to a trainer friend of mine who was kind enough to come up from NC to help evaluate and tattoo the pups.  That left me 5 pups to sell.  I'm pretty sure I didn't even come close to breaking even but it was a HELL of a litter.

4th breeding the bitch went into distressed and had to have her uterus removed.  All three pups were born dead.

Hey, I'm still in the game (much poorer) and that's because I love the breed and wouldn't live without them.
