why breed so far from the standard?

is this what us show lines are supposed to look like ? is the standard different over there?

sorry for the silly questions but i don't know much about show linesnot my cuppa tea.

IMO this dog looks deformed but looking at the pedigree there seem to be a lot of CH's.

looks like a VERY young immature american bitch.  not the best representative of american dogs.  not all look like that.  there are quite a few nice american dogs being shown at the moment.  She won't fill out for another year or so.

I think some of the german dogs adv. on here are just as bad if not worse with the bent spines and super steep croups.

 AHHHHHHH, THAK YOU UBER LAND

I THOUGHT I WAS THE ONLY  ONE SEING THAT ABOUT GERMAN DOGS....But nobody are talking about it on this site.  Just talking about American lines that are not good and crippled.

QUESTION:

IS ANYBODY HERE HAVE GONE TO AT LEST ONE AMERICN SPECIALTY TO SEE THE DOGS YOUR COMPLAINING ABOUT??..DIDN'T SEE A LOT OF YOU ON THOSE SHOWS.

I MYSELF HAVE DONE SCHUTZHUND AND OBEDIENCE AND HAVE SEEN GERMAN SHOW. I THINK THERE IS GOOD AND BAD IN BOTH CATEGORIES...

AND YES THEY'RE IS A LOT A GOOD AMERICAN DOG IN THE SHOW RING PRESENTLY.  BUT I'M SURE MOST OF YOU DON'T KNOW ABOUT THEM...

At least her movement is forward and not rolling in a circle.

At least she covers ground with general ease.

I don't particularly like the super long thigh, but would rather that than , a back that breaks in the middle.

I don't really like the muzzle skull ratio, but I have seen worse.

At least her ears are set on fairly nicely and not off to the side , like the dumbo look.

I think she has been stacked a little extremely.  She probably wouldn't look as bad , if she were relaxed and not forced in this position.  Notice how her topline improves while she is in movement , it comes closer to level, as compared to  when she is stacked.

Imagine if she was Black and red Saddle, she would look so different.  Her color is very typical of American show lines that lack good deep pigment.

Just a few of my thoughts

Looks like it has some Malinois in it to me

Don't insult the Malinois!  She's not bad for an ASS, and  loooook she can do the flying trot which is so  highly prized by ASS breeders.  I wish they would go ahead and make the leap to officially change the breed name to American Show Shepherds, since they no longer  resemble German Shepherd Dogs  in either conformation or character.

I joined the SonoMarin GSD club in 1994 and did not know that I had a very substantial (over sized) East German solid black male and they were all American Show lines from the "Specialty Shows". Lots of Covy Tucker Hill at their worst. I was clueless and they were in shock. There were lines of people coming to meet Shadow and lots of people gave me their cards because they wanted to breed to him. (I did not do that). At one of the shows, the official photographer was so taken with his "unusual" he took some pictures of us and sent them to me for free. He asked me to contact him if I ever bred Shadow. He said Shadow was the most beautiful Shepherd he had ever seen.

1994 at 13 months old

In more recent years some of the "Specialty" breeders have imported West German showlines to add to their breeding programs. Maybe I will have to go to some of their shows and see what it looks like now. I live not too far from Covy Tucker Hill Kennels in Cotati, California. They were the "architects" of the American Showline Specials.

Many of them don't look too bad from the side, but, when you stand next to one and look down, their chests are very deep but narrow, like a Borzoi. That is so that they can really swing their arms freely without any pesky rib cage in the way.

this is what happens when people stray from the standard....its just not right.the daughter is as bad and like i say a lot of the dogs in the pedigree are CH

when you say American show-lines are we talking about AKC shows or private shows?

AKC.

I went to a show after moving back here from Germany. I took my German Showline male (about 9 months) at the time. It was like walking into the twilight zone. I was used to all of the beautiful dogs in Germany. My baby dog was twice the dog as the ones running in circles. His pigment was dark red and his bone was dense, very unlike the washed out boneracks running like cripples. Was funny to see the dirty looks my dog got. I guess he was the odd man out that day.
