LOL!  Okay sorry!  Are German Shepherds really that much better in Germany than anywhere else?  After talking to breeders in the States and Canada it seems that a lot of them ship dogs over here to Europe.  I have looked here but haven't really seen a dog I've fallen in love with you know

Germany is the Fatherland not only of German Shepherd dogs but of selective breeding more dog breeds originated in Germany than any other country in the world by far!!

Oki there are good breeder’s everywhere, USA, Europe etc. What makes a good breeder has nothing to do where one is located. But if you buying in your own country you have the chance to go and check out the dog, and  see how his kennel operates, see how they handle socialization of pup at early age (very important in my opinion), you can see the dog in person. I would advice you to buy in Germany. I am not pro shipping either on top of that so my opinion maybe bias I just had once bad experience with shipping and my pup still pays for that mistake. So don't jump on the pup just because of look. Web pages tend to be very decisive.

but the fact the SV is a governing body among other things means the are way way way more great breeders in Germany

If you are in Germany, why not consider something from Kirschental? They're excellent people, have a proven reputation, very knowledgeable, and have excellent bloodlines. And their pricing isn't through the roof. www.kirschental.de.

 Louise,

By all means buy whatever dog you want. However, yes, most of us would be surprised because there are OUTSTANDING kennels all over Europe and a good dog should not cost so much unless it has a lot of work behind it, excellent parents that you can go see, and the dog is going to fit your lifestyle and needs. Also, consider the cost and trouble of importing. That is not so cheap these days. I have not looked at the dog, nor will I, and I have never heard of the kennel. All I can say is be certain to do your homework. Given the fact that you just started posting looking for a dog and I think I remember you saying this was going to be a first GSD, I would suggest you may not have learned enough to make a selection. If so, the deal may end up being fine, but it could also end up being something you did not anticipate. There are plenty of excellent breeders in each country. Unless you have specific requirements, it does seem a little off the wall to import a GSD from Canada into Germany.

Good luck with your decision.

I'm with Hodie and you should consider taking her advise.  Most of us have nothing to gain by giving our .02

I too feel $2500 is a bit excessive for a puppy.

If you are seriously looking at spending 2500 plus shipping you could find a pup in Germany that would read you your morning paper with coffee. And you'd be able to see the pup and breeder in person. Seriously I'd kill to be in your position.

I, too, ehco the concerns about buying and shipping from Canada when such nice puppies are available in Europe.

FWIW - I got a male at 2 years old, clear halth checks, OFA-Good, Normal elbows, Good back x-rays for $200  less than that and he is a very nice certified and working cadaver dog with solid Czech working lines.

Have you considered the cost of shipping the pup to Germany.

I was once advised that certain breeds are strong in certain countries in yr case GSD are best from Germany. Its all for your advantage plus you can get it cheaper and be fully assured of what you are getting.

Good luck.
