Kalibeck, I just love the last sentence in your post to this thread. It speaks volumes to what sort of dog owner YOU are.

Honestly its profitable breeding when you look at satisfaction side of it. But you will have a profit which is so small that if you dont breed many litters you will not make a living.

On the negative side it is a gamble. Some bitches do not produce etc...

If you take my senarion. I purchased imported 3 dogs at a huge cost in 2005, only this year March I had a litter of 6 pups which I kept back 1 pup.

My investment was - USD 6000 x 3 = USD 18000.

Food and vet - USD 4000 for 3 years

Total investment - 21000/=

Mind you this is without the show fees, labour, water, electricity, and other overhead cost.

So i sold a pup @ USD 350 x 5 which gave me USD 1750.

Pups dont go for a high price regardless of how good the parents are in my country.

Where does this put me.

Anyway's. Breeding dogs is profitable but even a 1% profit is considered profitable. To make a living out of it one will need to breed a lot of quality dogs.

I agree John, a good breeder will want to keep in touch with their buyers and a good breeder will keep their pups until they've gone to the right home.  For a small "hobby breeder" it's difficult to move pups even when you have excellent quality because people tend to go to the larger breeders feeling like they'll have better luck or are more "reputable".  I think if you find someone small, who gives quality care to their dogs and is involved in some level of training with the dogs you will find IMO you'll have better luck because each pup is not just a $ figure to them.  The longer the pups are with you you can't help but get attached to that certain one-hence I kept another male.  We made the decission final today and he's got his own crate now right next to his daddy and momma and half brother.  This was my first litter and my husand informed me today it'd better be my last for a lonnnnnnnggggg time cause we were at our "sanity" limit 2 dogs ago. lol  I figure I've got room for 1 more kennel now out back......lol

I was lucky, the pups all went to homes I would have wanted to go to so far.
