I will bet money that it is Staph--which replicate in a moist, warm, environment. The Happy Jack Pad Kote is entirely safe to use in this area. I've had great success with this product. Have even used it on goopy, cracked lips (and related skinfold dermatitis).

Took my pup to the vet with something similar,is she licking at the area a lot?
The vet said she had a touch of vaginitis and put her on antibiotics

I would bet it's yeast based on your description and the pics, in general staph doesn't smell. If it is yeast the vinegar solution should help. Don't you have vinegar in the house? it could be staph but I'm leaning towards yeast. "gloss paint" describes yeast. It could also be both.

no she isnt that bothered by it there is some urgent nibbling like she has a real bad itch i have managed to clean her up a bit, it just peels off weird???
by gsdlvr2 on 22 June 2008 - 23:06
Peeling off is not weird for yeast. For staph or fungus, it's not going to happen.

Louise: Can you read and post the ingredients in Happy Jack Pad Kote if you have a bottle there??????

Yes, Staph can produce scaling of the skin as the pustules rupture, dry, and form "collarette" lesions--and it may smell something awful--expecially, if generalized. My experience with Staph infections in the dog is that they often occur as vaccinoses in response to polyvalent vaccines and may accompany hypothyroidism (often secondary to steroid treatment) in adults.
Malassezia pachydermatis (yeast infection of the ear canal) may exist commitantly with Staph.
Dermatophytosis (Microsporum canis--"ringworm") is rare in the dog (when compared to the cat) and tends to occur in young and immunosuppressed animals. It may be easily diagnosed with a fungal culture via dermatophyte test media (DTM), a Wood's lamp, or direct microscopic examination of the hair follicles.
Vaginitis in young bitches is often referred to as "puppy vaginitis" and usually corrects after the first heat. However, if one wishes to treat it, a douch with dilute chlorhexidine solution may be preferable to oral antibiotics. One should attempt to keep the perivulvar area dry with Gold Bond powder and, if the lesions spread, the use of topical Happy Jack Pad Kote is suggested.
