Neither Dogtra or Tri-tronics bark collars will be activated by another dogs bark. hey have vibration sensors on the collar that fit directly over the dogs vocal cords. They cannot be activated by another dog, unless the dog was literally neck to neck. Even then I don't think it is really possible. You got some bad information somewhere.
I have no issue with e-collars. They are quite an effective tool. However, they can also be the most inhumane when used incorrectly, even with good intentions.
Reason hits the nail on the head about consistancy.
Inconsitancy=unfair.
I have to wonder with you last post. You say you have 4 dogs. I don't know of a collar that works more than two dogs (I could be wrong) Even if there were, you still have to switch from the remote to activate each individual dog. In addition not all dogs are the same and require a different level of stimulus. You must make your praise/correction within two seconds of the behavior.
So if you have only one collar, how are you using it with 4 dogs? If you do have some collar I am unaware of that has a 4 dog option, how do you recognize which dog is barking, then switch the remote to that dog, at the correct level of intensity for that dog within 2 seconds? The only possible way I could see that happening is if you have the collar in your hands at all times, and have a visual of your dogs at all times. I highly doubt that is the case.
There is virtually no way you can be consistant (fair) and accomplish what you are trying to accomplish using the method you describe above.
......is just the barking for little or no reason that i want to stop.
This statement in and of itself is unfair. How and what would qualify as "little reason" How is a dog supposed to know what you consider a justifiable reason to bark? Even if they could, since they have superior hearing and sense of smell, how would you know they are not barking at something you would think is OK, when you do not have the sensory capablities to identify what they may be barking at if you can not see it?
The fact that you are on this board asking questions on how to use an e-collar is not a good thing. Frankly, you should not be using one until you know how to use it. You should find a trainer with experience and get some insturctional video before you use the e-collar.
I am not trying be rude; just frank. Your reasoning and approach to this problem is waaaay off base.
Do you and your dogs a favor. Get some bark collars for the barking then get some formal training in the use of the e-collar before going any further.
Good luck

hey guys thanks for the responses
i will try and explain my self more clearly the boys go out for a couple of hours at a time then we swap them over
the problem is mainly with peppa and wicket they have developed a habit of sitting at the door barking to be let in.(that is what was meant by little or no reason. the other girl and boy are very well behaved so don't need hardly any correction at all)
this has resulted in one of our neighbors complaining so i have tried everything to stop them nothing has worked.
i have managed to be very consistent so far and they seem to have got the message.
i fully understand what you are saying about consistency and i am always very careful about this.
the collar i have got is excellent and v simple to use and thank god 3 out of the 4 have the same setting which is quite mild our older bitch needs a slightly higher setting but i am quick at adjusting it as the design is really simple
thanks again and sorry for any confusion i may have caused
PS the dogtra NCP602 has 2 collars and one hand set.

More info is always better.......
Easy fix. Get yourself two bark collars. Since you have the neighbor complaining, I would get a tri-tronics. They have a bark odometer.
To fix the behaviour. Put the bark collars on when the boys go outside. Every time. They will learn collar on, I bark, I get corrected. Same thing every time. Every bark, with the same intesity. They will then become conditioned to "when I am outside, the collar is on, and I don't bark. This will be totally consitant and black and white to the dog.
Now to deal with the neighbor and animal control when they come. It sounds as though you are home all day. If that is the case, put the boys on a schedual. They go outside at this time for X amount of time. Then you keep a log of when the dogs go out everyday and how many barks are on the bark odometer. This will do two things.
1) It will further the consistancy of "I am outside, this time everyday with the collar on, therefor I do not bark"
2) More importantly, when animal control comes a knockin, you have a log of everyday your dog was outside at this time for x hours and barked x amount of times. You show this log to A/C and explain that you do this religously every day in your attempt to keep peace with your neighbor. The neighbor will try to say the dog barked all day long 100 times. You will have documented proof as to how long and how much your dogs actually do bark. A/C will see your concern and effort and start looking at the neighbor as the problem.
Save the e-collar for your formal training.
Good luck.
P.S. This advice comes from experience. I had this exact same problem once.

Real Dog
Good posts simple practical advice i was going to respend to tigermouse today but you have done it for me
Tigermouse
with my limited experience in the vibrate attention facility on the collar i would suggest it is better used under the supervision of someone with experience (proven) to just an internet keyboard warrior i would further suggest that unles you are training for something very specific under the guidance of a trainer on that dicipline the collar would be best employed in its box

thankyou guys
i am looking into what you have said and am grateful for your guidance
i will not be using the collar unless it is a last resort and i will look for an experienced trainer to help me
i have spent the past 3 months reading and watching video's but some of them give conflicting advice .
regards tracie
