A friend of mine has a Kirschental female (sole female) in a litter of 6. I've got 1st pick full litter-brother to this female-both very healthy, excellent West German show line prospects. There's no issues, problems, etc with her and she just passed her 1st heat (our pups are 9 mos old). She will eventually be bred with my friend's male, who is also a WGR show line male. There's no concern with her future fertility abilities whatsoever.
No, that's not true at all, Gabby. The thing to pay attention to, if buying a breeding female is SIZE of the litter. If a mother was consistently only producing 2-3 pups per litter, then a female from that mother will very likely do the same thing-that you wanna consider if you are wanting to do breeding down the road. You want to purchase your females from nice producing females. In your case, 7 is a nice litter and is perfectly normal.
A friend of mine bought a German import female where there were 1F2M in the litter. This bitch matured, became a certified bomb detection dog, and had a litter of 12 sired by my male (she produced 9F,3M-raised 7F,2M). So nope-no fertility problems there.
The male's sperm is what decides whether female or male pups are concieved. It could be, for whatever reason, the vaginal condition favored male sperm over female when your prospective puppy's litter was produced-it has nothing to do with the healthiness of the puppies. I would not be worried a bit about her later ability to produce IF she proved herself a decent prospect in training first.

Yeah, that is definitely a load of crap. My older female is the only female out of a litter of 9 and she has whelped 3 healthy litters. Plus she is one of the toughest females I've ever owned. Maybe she's so tough because there was a strong testosterone influence in the womb or maybe it's just because of growing up with all those brothers she had to be tough. LOL.

Lol-I have to agree, Joda. I do not think there's any influence/negative effects of being the only girl with a bunch of brothers. If they're picked on earlier in life, then that might explain them being scrappier. But a negative influence on her future reproductive capabilities? I think not.

I was the only female in my family and had two brothers..I had a family...where in the world did that person get that...
I wouldnt buy a puppy from that breeder either...No telling what she has or has not done to the health and care of your pup..if she has that line of bull , she isnt a german shepherd breeder of any knowledge...Those of us who spend our life learning and sharing knowledge , dont sell pups to people with wives tales..If you are going to sell a litter , you tell your customers the truth and only the knowledge of a breeder tells you a world about that breeder.
Sorry but in my books,,,Id run the other way...part of your responsiblity is to ask, just like your are,,,and when you find out that this is bunk,,,what else she know, would not want me to purchase one of her pups and depend on her to guide me and keep me informed on the parentage or heriditary facts...Part of buying a pup, is to find out about the parents and what the carry and how they act and what experiences she can tell you about them....to tell you that is ridiculous...
Kinda like the woman who told me that feeding raw meat causes a dog to turn on people and attack them as they have had the smell of blood and eaten it...

I know where this idea comes from, even if it is a load of crap.
In cattle, if a cow conceives twin calves, one male and one female, the female may be infertile, and is known as a 'freemartin'. This is because the male calf starts to produce testosterone while still in the womb, which can affect the female's reproductive system.
However, this doesn't hold true for other species!!

Yes, sunsilver hit the nail on the head...Maybe she raises cattle and that is where it comes from ..
I have Dressa who was a female only and her brother Gauda were the only pups in the litter of two...Dressa just had a litter of all males and one female blk.red.., one male blk./red and the rest were all sable males...One female in her litter...
she has had litters with 3-5 , 5-2 , 6-1, and 7-1 .
That is because dogs are multiple birth creatures...not like cows or humans where one birth is normal....

Gabby,
What the lady told you is not true and she sounds like she doesn't know a lot about dogs.
I would be very cautious about purchasing a puppy from her unless you know what your looking at and do a little research into the health and soundness of the pup's and the parents.
JMO.

Actually, she a very well known breeder. She has very nice dogs and titles them. I don't know where she got this idea but I'm not going to put her down, I was just looking to find dogs that people owned to see if it's true.
I did a search like OSO said and I did run across a lot of single females that show no offspring. I know that not everyone puts their pups up on this site but there were more with no or only single pups here.
I'm not saying it's true, but I am not going to put my energy and training into a potentially sterile dog either. Maybe she did me a favor. She could have just taken my money and sent me on my way but she didn't and I think she's being a responsible breeder.
I don't know, I appreciate everyone's input.
Thanks.

OK,
Well maybe she just like's old wive's tales. I've heard about the cattle before but never heard this of dogs or cats or any other animal I've ever raised. I'm not a vet and no expert by any means so maybe your on to something we would all like to know more about. If you find documented facts on the topic please share what you find out with us.
I'd still be cautious, its just me. I don't trust anyone, my father was a used car salesman..LOL
Good luck with it.
