There is a lack of registration numbers yet I don't think this matters since the half breed can not be registered as either.

I'm starting to see the database changing in ways that do not impress me.   Now its just a matter of time until its ruined.

I really have no objection to cross breeding as long as it has a purpose other than money.   I disagree jason.

Good luck Oli.

Bob M - you should tell the KNPV and Dutch Police folks that their dogs are designer dogs.  I would suggest doing it on the field with a couple of suits on.

And while you're at it - tell the cops in the US who work with these designer mutts.

i'm not advocating the cross breeding of gsds and malis, but i think our rescue (from a shelter) claire is just this combo. she was "advertised" as a gsd mix. she looks very very much like the cross in this thread, just not so much black. her body type is identical - not the gsd silhouette. she is very different in her herding and prey drives than angus, jumps straight up like a cat, and angus's breeder says she had add when she was trained (lol - she's always the star in any class now though) plus he thought she was funny looking (he IS a gsd breeder). again, i'm not advocating the breeding of the two types of dogs, but i have to admit (biased of course) that i think it is an attractive mix.

maybe there should be a "mix" catagory for people to list their combo breedings?

Cate:    Well said!  A GSD/Mali is as far from a "designer dog" as you can get - it's a workhorse.

Again...Spend the time. .. Do the background work... If you want a Designer dog go ahead and build one... It,s a free world the chase for the newest and bestest is never ending, Have a blast.

A dog is called a "designer dog" because the idiots who are breeding them are trying to invent a new breed and at the same time appeal to the pet owning public in mass quantities.  In fact, the people using/breeding these dogs aren't trying to invent a new breed,  and don't call them a "breed" at all and it's usually on a very limited basis.  These are dogs being utilized for military,  police, and some sports like KNPV,  the world over.  Also Malis and GSDs and Dutchies have been mixed back and forth for eons in some countries, this is nothing new.  Anyway they are kissing cousins.

I disagree these dogs belong in a "mixed" section.  I think it is correct to make exception for GSD/Malis and GSD/Dutchies as well,  because this is a well known and accepted practice especially in the working world of dogs, providing it is made clear in the pedigree.

Spending the time and doing a background check has gotten us what?  Prancing ponies who cant even go over a six foot straight wall anymore? (I know...generalization...but I am imaging this is the majority, yes?)  The German, Dutch and Belgian Shepherds all come from the same stock - all three of these breeds actually used to have the same structure...the same general ability...but people worked so hard at bettering the breed, spending the time digging into backgrounds and breeding the "right" dog that they forgot to maintain the breed.

I maintain that the German / European Horse people have alot more sense than the Dog People do.  That's probably why the German Horses are kicking butt....but the german dogs seem to be only in SchH - very few in Ring or KNPV where mals and dutchies - dogs that look like the German Shepherd of old did I might add - are doing generally well in all the sports, despite having fewer numbers.

I'm pretty sure the cops dont have a whole lot of time - they need a dog that can do the job.  These dogs do it - and very well I might add.

I have to agree with everyone.

The mixing might turn out great for the the sport or ppd as stated before. I might be wrong, but maybe what Bob is talking about is the "bettering the breed". Mixing these 2 types of dogs is not bettering the GSD breed, but  may it be possible that it is bettering dogs in general for the sport?

I just think there is a difference between making a superior working dog and bettering the breed. I have no problem with either as long as people know the difference.

I'd much rather have a bonsai GSD than a shepadoodle or a shepapoo.  A bonsai would be compact and easy to transport in a backpack or baby stroller and wouldn't cost much to feed. Ofcourse both parents would need to be titled and breed surveyed. If anyone is expecting a bonsai litter this year, please let me know. I'd like a female. Should I be posting this to another forum?
