Garlic is nature's antibiotic, antiviral and antifungal agent.

I have found feeding garlic extremely helpful with my elderly dogs. I guess its like many things some dogs can take it and others cant. Recently I read an article suggesting the feeding of garlic to dogs with CDRM, so it obviously has its benefits.
You hear of dogs that die from eating small amounts of chocolate - well several of mine have stolen large quantities of chocolate and never even suffered from an upset stomach, just this Easter my old boy stole an easter egg, still in its packaging and carefully unwrapped it and scoffed the lot!

mgambone - you state you worked for a vet for years and had about eight cases. What percentage of dogs seen do these eight cases represent? I'm betting this is a small percentage, so a reaction to garlic ingestion is infrequent.
Here's a link that provides more information on garlic and a recommended dose: http://onibasu.com/archives/kn/126309.html. I don't feed garlic and believe that feeding a species appropriate diet goes a long way in keeping dogs healthy and protected.

It's useless to even post in defence of nature ... man is out to kill all ideas of natures natural healings. I wonder what that Emeril thinks.... LOL There's always someone to "overdose" and ruin the thought of it all. I guess we need regulations on garlic now.

I used to give my guys garlics for "the benefits" but then DID read a study somewhere that it CAN be toxic. The problem I read in a couple of articles is that nobody knows the toxic dose and it varies by dog apparently. I am not willing to take the risk really. There are other things I can use so why risk it? I think it will be on everybody to decide, but people SHOULD be informed that there is a risk involved. My guys used to eat grapes and raisins....now they've come out discussing all kinds of problems with those for dogs....just because my guys did ok does not mean there was no risk involved. And I'm glad to know of a risk ya know? Regardless, never will I give any supplement that has something that could be risky without knowing what the risk is...

Just about anything can be toxic when given in the wrong dosage. I believe garlic has benifits to humans I'm not sure about animals.. not saying one way or the other, but I have a friend who thinks garlic is magic and takes, I should say eats garlic all day every day for heart and whatever else and he is toxic!!! you can't stand down wind of him for long...:)
I kid you not! I'm not sure it would fend off fleas or ticks either, maybe mosquitoes.
I dont think dogs need these kinds of things to be healthy and strong. I remember POPEYE and got tricked into eating my spinach........ YUCK!!!! only once.

Hodie, thank you for the affirmation. Until several years ago I too was guilty of occassionally supplementing dog's food with garlic, and one day found an article indicating that it (as well as onions) was perhaps poisonous. Me, with my "prove it" mentality did not trust but one (1) article so I began to explore as many sources as I could. In conclusion, I determined that since I had no negative effects from this practive that I was perhaps lucky. In the end, I stopped doing this.
We seldom have a few table scraps to give to the dogs, and I am mindful of the onion content. I know that cooked onions can have a different toxicity level, but again I tend to remove any pieces.
Shasta, I concur with your post. We know other human foods, such as chocolate, grapes, raisins, coffee, etc. can have a toxic effect on a dog but we cannot predict what exactly constitutes a debilitating and/or lethal dose, so it is perhaps best to err on the side of safety and not allow dogs to eat these things.
Regards,
Bob-O.

I do not agree the the Garlic being harmfull to Dogs
Of the 50 plus years i have kept Dogs, 31 of those has to give Brewers yeast and Garlic tablets to Two Dogs
Twice a week for there life times,
One passed on at 16.50 years old, the other 14 years old so was it the Garlic which caused them to die at this young age, i think not.
One must always remember It is not what you give the Dogs but in the amount you give them,
All things different to there normal diets, to be given in moderation. that way they will get the benifit from it

I have used garlic for 18 years with my german shepherds but I would not and do not give COCKER SPANIELS in my care and I have 5 if them garlic....Cocker spaniels have a different digestion system from a german shepherd....SO give me some cases of German shepherds dying or sick from garlic...
Also the patient 's owner in the vets office ususally is giving garlic or vitamins without respect for knowledge and cant even tell you what the did or how much or when or why they are doing it......usually the reply is "Well, someone told me to give my dog garlic and I did and now its sick...
Natural cures are what the government and the FDA dont want u to use of know about...It would put the researchers of Pharmacutical and drugs and the dog food cos . out of business along with the Doctors and tthe Vets..
