The OP asked which of the two fictional dogs we preferred. I think it's pretty obvious to anyone who has been around a while in the breed you look at more than titles, and just because a dog is breed surveyed doesn't make it breed worthy. On the other hand, the breeder with titled, breed surveyed dogs has more than a leg up on the person who doesn't work their dogs, or is relying on the reputation of a couple of nice dogs in the pedigree.

As I said originally, the stock would have to be exceptional if not surveyed.

Anyone know where my posts are going?
This is the second thread where my post just up and vanished?

by yellowrose of Texas on 15 March 2008 - 05:03
WOW GARD : THEY DID DISAPPEAR.......ASK HODIE , SHE WILL TELL YOU WHERE IT WENT....
POST IT AGAIN....I READ IT AND IT IS GONE....AND I THINK SEVERAL OTHERS WENT WITH YOU.......WHAT IN THE WORLD IS GOING ON..????
BUT THE " PROTECTION" THREAD IS STILL WAVING IN THE BREEZE...BY HENRY.....A USELESS THREAD WITH NO GOOD PURPOSE.....

Health, temperament and working ability would be my priorities. Structure is also very important but I agree with GARD's post that disappeared...IMO functional structure (able to withstand years of work) is more important than what a conformation judge thinks is "correct".

GARD, I noticed it too and thought it was odd...

by sueincc on 15 March 2008 - 22:03
Yeah, I read it too and don't understand why it would be deleted. GARD, maybe it's just a glitch in the system. Anyway, it was a good post, had a lot of common sense points in it. Maybe you can repost the jist of it?

well just to throw a few things out there.
just because i pay the money for 2 titled and koer'd dogs, gives me a leg up? i'm new to the whole titling and showing dogs game.
i can go buy a 2007 wusv competitor dog right now, i can also call any of a # of breeders and get a nice drivey, titled and koer'd female. now being that i have dogs, that are by SV standards breed worthy, should i breed them? 2 nice , high drive dogs, both koer'd , and for the sake of argument we'll say both V rated. should i breed them? what will they produce? i'm joe smo and am going to advertise and sell them for 1000$ ea as great, family protectors! to unsuspecting buyers that have no idea that adorable fluffy little pup is going to terrize them till they either give it away or it ends up in a pound! like so many others. or go the other way, again titled and koer'd dogs, neither of which are good workers, neither have GREAT structure, should i breed them? their titled and koer'd ,a1 hips, normal elbows! just because you can AFFORD said dogs doesn't mean you should breed them!! !!! !!! !!!
i like some others am on the fence, neither choosing working or showline, and also hate that there is a difference and wish it would just go back to 1 gsd! all purpose, steadfast, noble, loving, balanced German Shepherd Dog! ! ! ! every gsd is beautiful in it's own special way! i wish they all had something to offer the breed, but it just isn't so! regardless in our semi-free country they will not be selectively bred! it's just something we all have to deal with.

Yes, a leg up on those who are breeding dogs that are not actual working dogs AND have no performance titles, and no show titles. Again, I don't think just because a dog has a breed survey means that dog is breed worthy, I do think it's an important jumping off point. I have a great deal of respect for reputable breeders and I think there is a LOT more to breeding than throwing two surveyed dogs together - hell if that's all it took I'd sure throw my hat in the ring, but it's not, it requires an incredible amount of knowledge about genetics, health, history, husbandry, etc... As it happens, the majority of german line dogs in Germany are bred according to the SV system. This is not a perfect system, but to my way of thinking it's better than any other system I am aware of. This is especially difficult for breeders in the USA to adhere to because of the time and expense involved in showing, titling, breed surveying, etc.., so I want to support those breeders who are trying to follow this system.
I know many people are bothered by the fact that there are working line and show line dogs. I'm not bothered by that because I think it's just what happens, more to do with human nature. Look at hunting breeds you see the same kind of split.

well i have alot of opinions on this whole matter!
on this thread question i'd like 1 of each, either way, stong working stud / kkl2 bred to a kkl 1 sch1 , or vice versa, strong working female to a kkl 1 stud that's not such a hard worker. idealy producing puppies with better structure and working drives. notice i say ideally! we all know it doesn't work that way or everyone would be doing this !
biggest opinion! anyone breeding is rolling the dice with every litter! we all want the best, we're all biased that our dog is the greatest! i think some people don't breed selectively enough and vice versa, others breed to selectively!
