Unfortunately, this compound is detectable for up to a year and a half after administration, so drug tested athletes should avoid it.

aye dear Capt. ruffeling ye feathers is not me objective.

I don't believe it is kidney failure just yet. diagnosed or not. I don't buy it. I haven't seen lab results and the diagnosis could be wrong or incomplete at this point.

I don't know where that printout of reported characteristics you posted came from but it is incorrect. it looks as if it came from someone selling them. These drugs are metabolized in the liver and IF the problem with the dog is the liver it could then become to that dog liver toxic even if to another dog it was not.

I would like to see the lab results and hopefully the OP will be able to get and post them.

Also, there is a difference between "liver toxic" and "metabolized by the liver"

The owners only just gave me the results of the tests that were done on this dog. I will post just the things that are abnormal: blood tests - hemocrit - high - 0,6 (0,3-0,5) VGM - high 96,15 (60-77) CGMH - low 261,83 (320-360) juveniles - high 1,13 x 109/L (0 - 0,3) (a kind of blood cell I think) eosinophils - high 1,77 x 109/L (0-0,9) ALT high - 74,00 U/L (15-58) AST high - 100,00 U/L (16-43) Bilirubin total - high - 10,5 (1,7-5,1) (increase due to non-conjugated bilirubin) Globulin - low 22,09 g/L (24-40) FA - high 111,44 U/L (10-73) Uric acid - high - 70,10 mmol/L (11.9-55,5) Glucose - low - 1,11 mmol/L (4,27-6,66) Urea - high 18,39 (3,57 - 8,92) Everything else tested was normal. feces exam normal, no parasites. Sorry, I do not know what all the initials stand for... I will show these to my vet asap but in the meantime if anyone has any comments???

Have they done a urinalysis?   Have they done a bile test?  Some of the findings can seem to indicate kidney and/or liver.

If this were my dog I would not be treating it with anything until I knew what I was treating.  In my specific case, I opted for a "cut her open, look at everything and biopsy anything that does not look right."  "Oh, and take big biopsies."  I am dealing with a 6 yo bitch, so a little different....  The other thing that I was adament aobut was the anasthetic and pain meds.  No non steroidal and nothing that was metabloized by the liver...

Best wishes for the pup,

Darcy

Sorry, I forgot to finish!  The only dog I knew with kidney failure was a young black lab pup....  She consumed mass quantities of water and was not concentrating her urine.....  In other words drank a lot, got pot bellied and the urine was totally dilute...

With our liver issues, the distension is there, but it does not change, no change in water consumption, but teh urine is dark with bilirubin.

My vet saw the results last night and thought it was more indicative of liver problems, but hope to examine the dog soon. I will try to get the owners to take her to him (as he is the best vet around here) and will keep you posted as to any updates...many thanks

That's too bad. I was hoping the lab results would be better. They aren't horrible but they do confirm that it is the liver and not the kidneys.

It would be better if you also posted the normal lab results too along with the abnormal ones.

by oso on 16 March 2008 - 19:03

Thanks, these were all within normal ranges: erythrocytes, hemoglobin, leucocytes, neutophils, basophils, lymphocytes, monocytes, total proteins, albumin, amilase, cholesterol, GGT, CK, creatine, lipase.

by gsdlvr2 on 16 March 2008 - 20:03

they didn't check phos? it would still help if you could post the exact numbers of the normal labs as well, not just the names.

Did they check a copper level? What was the breakdown of the bilirubin? what was the number for direct bilirubin and the number for indirect (non-conjugated) bilirubin? they are both components for the total bilirubin result
