We recently completed an outside kennel project at the shelter. After years of planning and research, we finally had decided what we would do, against the advice of several "kennel contractors". They all said we would want a brush finish. Luckily, a couple of us have actually had or worked in kennels most of our lives and decided we would go with a flat finish. Yes, it is a tad slippery in the winter, BUT, the pads of the dogs do not get damaged. It is really easy to squeegy out. A lot easier to scoop when you have 45 dogs out in 8 large runs (some of the runs are larger than 14x12). We have alley ways around the kennels, those are the most dangerous, due to sliding. I still wouldn't use brush on those. However, in the spring I will be having the adhesive strips put down every foot, only in the alleys. Currently, we are using Awsome Paws salt and sand mixed for traction.
Sealer is very important! So is NOT using a metal shovel in the runs if you don't have covers. One of my brilliant employees used a snow blower in my brand news runs! Grrrrrrrr!
