There is far too little integrity and lots of ignorance among people breeding these dogs for one reason: profit. The dog is probably a long coat, has weak ears, as someone already noted, an unimpressive bloodline and the breeder is apparently ignorant enough to say the weak ears are not genetic. At the most fundamental, short of injury, all things boil down to genetics. She passes pups on who will also likely produce weak ears.
I have a female who is SchH 3, KKL1 lebenzeit, OFA and a stamped and multiple time V rated and I bred her twice with two different males and she produced weak ears in approximately half of the pups. I will not breed this otherwise most excellent female again. But if all I cared about was money, I would.
The fact that there are people posting here defending her says a lot about where the breed is headed. If one wants to breed dogs with lots of faults, do so. But then say so truthfully that the dog does not meet the breed standard.
Pathetic. And, I quote Blitzen: "You can't fix stupid".

Black shepherds are beginning to become seperate breeds just like the white shepherds.
Wow, I'd never heard that one before.
I took a look at the page of the breeder who produced the soft-eared female. Their dogs are not particularly appealing individuals IMO, more like American showlines, but without the angualtion. These fellows wouldn't do well in either ring, German or American.
Two Moons, it's not this woman in particular, it's the concept in general. I'd rather see dogs bred with a purpose, not bred "just because." I feel the same way when I see any site like this.

That fact also speaks volumes about where this message board is headed. Am I the only one or has anyone else noticed the rather disconcerting and alarming numbers of this type of breeder/buyer/justifier on the board?

Its a very larger world out there with many things we dont like. You can only control what is yours, what you have power over. As long as good breeders are out there the rest mean nothing. You dont have to like what others do, I sure as heck dont like many things I see. I know what I can change and except what I can't. Its less stressful.

Please tell me this is someone's idea of a cruel joke. How can anyone possibly justify such a breeding program? And then she goes so far as to state with authority that it's OK that Kena's ears don't stand since it's not genetic anyway. This reminds me of a poster to this board who made a case for not xraying her dogs prior to breeding them since they could jump so they couldn't possibly be dysplastic.
More dogs for Camp Wolfgang coming right up thank you. Nope you sure can't fix stupid.

I guess no one looked at the link to northwest K-9. He offers phone consulations. I think fools and idiots are they're own reward and I see no sense in interfering with nature.

He returned home , had the pup vetted. giardia, cocksideousus, several different species of worms and ear mites. All for the fair price of $2800.

The fact that there are people who keep dogs/pups in this way as mentioned by k9SAR above is no surprise. I have people calling me all the time to tell me about similar situations. Most of the time they bought a dog and did nothing else and want ME to do something about it. I tell them they are the fool and they should have walked away and THEY should have reported the conditions to the authorities. If the buyer had sense, he/she would have walked out. And further, he/she should have reported the breeder to the local or country authorities. What is of more concern is that the buyer even knows someone who knows about GSDs (who posted here) and did not have sense enough to call and ask if the conditions should be a warning sign. How do we educate people who refuse to be educated?
As far as breed worthiness goes, there is EVERY reason for more people who SAY they love the breed to speak out against breeders who are doing us all a disservice. Again, no, we cannot stop anyone breeding genetically flawed floppy eared, long coated dogs or dogs who are sick. But we can speak out loudly to educate those who do not know better that they are NOT getting a good representative of the breed of GSDs.
I had a man come here today to make arrangements to board his GSDs. He just bred his 9 year old male to another non-discript female he owns, even though the male has been on pancreatic enzymes for years. No hip or elbow clearances, no nothing. Very sad. He did not even know that the pancreatic problem might be passed on to the offspring. And yes, though it risked my boarding his dogs and loosing income, he and I had a discussion about the breeding. I told him in no uncertain terms that this was not a good thing to have done. He wanted a pup from the male, so he bred a litter and he admits that none of the pups are like his male....surprise, surprise. In the meantime, he created and sold another 8 pups of whom chances are, at least several will end up being bred.
Just a few weeks ago, someone advertising a male on this site that I had inquired about told me, when I asked if the elbows and hips had been x-rayed, that he did not need to do it because the dog "ran and jumped and acted just fine".
There are all too many people breeding who should not be breeding. I speak out about it and am called a zealot. So fine. Call me what you like, but this is wrong and those of you who say you also love this breed should be standing shoulder to shoulder to speak out. We can disagree about titles for Schutzhund, for example, as to whether it is a true measure of breed worthiness. But in my opinion, things such as health issues, clear faults like weak ears, long coats, diseases etc. must be considered as part of a sacred checklist that we honor before we consider a dog breed worthy.
As for the increase in ads for dogs who should not be here, well they are here. And that is part and parcel of marketing a site for the masses and more people NOT being outspoken here about what is and is not correct. Call us the breed police if you like. If more of us do not involve ourselves in these and other issues, i guarantee that none of us will know this breed as we know it now in our childrens' lifetime. On most lists I know of that are decent, one may not post ads like this. In this case, all we can do is speak out and hope that someone reads it and gets a clue.
Flack jacket is on.....
