ramgsd, the ORIGINAL Rin Tin Tin was a grey sable. The most recent pup chosen as his successor (Rin TIn TIn X) is also grey. Check out the link above to the 'swayback' GSD: it's the Rin Tin Tin website.
Very nice lookind dog, Nancy! :-)

I am not sure what low prey drive, medium drive is? You can have a dog with high prey drive be fine around farm animals. You must socialize and train them properly.
If you want to do obience and agility why not get a border collie? They excel at agility.

Hey, I am not trying to be confrontational - the dog I posted is simply a nice dog of west german working lines. There are many dogs of similar good structure.
There are many nice GSDs available today is the point I am making. I have met a number of impressive working dogs in search and rescue. I do not know how the groenendal compares in temperament with the malinois -if it is similar to the malinois then you really need to understand what you are getting into - A GSD is a much easier dog for someone not experienced with herding dogs to work with. But yes, the Belgians are supposed to be a square dog, the GSD never was.
I think the OP needs to get out and see dogs in person and not rely on the internet. AND really try to undersntand the temperament of the breeds she is looking at. The desire for a coated dog will narrow the pool considerably since it is not a desirable trait / hence one that serious breeders do not breed for. The saddle, well that has primarily been a showdog thing and was favored by American dog owners for years and years. The other colors have been with the breed for a long long time.

Sunsilver, yes i know that the original Rin Tin Tin was a sable. never said he wasn't if you'll reread my post. what i said was she liked the look of the RTT era, meaning the RTT era of the TV show that most here are just old enough to remember and that has shaped the minds of most here in the US as to what a GSD looks like. thanks for the post perhaps someone who's just having his first look at the GSD is on the board today and didn't know that.

WHY DOES EVERONE ON THIS BOARD HAVE TO BE SO F***ING NEGATIVE??
Believe me, I was asking some of the EXACT same questions when I first started looking for a registered dog a couple of years ago!
Haven't you got something better to do, Two Moons? Seems like everyone on this board likes to get their exercise by jumping to conclusions, flying off the handle, getting tied in knots of indignation, and climbing onto their high horse.
Go exercise your dogs instead, for pete's sake!
This is the only board I've ever been on where some of my legitimate questions go COMPLETELY UNANSWERED, unless someone sees fit to take offence with them, and jump all over me, as some of you are trying to do with this poster.!
Oh, and never mind trying to answer my question about how to groom a rather shaggy GSD for the show ring. After asking it here three times, I found someone on the Shiloh Shepherd board who was happy to answer it. Lots of former and currrent GSD people hang out there, and I don't have to deal with all the bullcrap I do here!

Sunsilver, I was just a little worn out from Tezz's search for a gsd and her praise of the malamute. One post could have done the job. If she cant find a good dog at a fair price how can anyone help her.. I know the breeds changed over the years. But it hasnt changed that much! And I know of a few Malamutes with bad temperment.
I dont think I was being negetive, she rambled on and on about what?
Sorry if I offended anyone.... I'm sitting here eating a snack with nothing better to do..... its11:26 P.M. I'm in my robe and the dogs when to the river today.

Sorry Tezz but look, there is no shortage of good dogs [GSD's] available. I think you could even find one that reminds you of your 1960's dog. I think I even have a nieghbor with malamutes, big ones. Hes back from Alaska were I asume he got the dogs.
No harm done..
