"The same thing happens as when you sell a puppy as a Pet that should have been a working dog and it comes back because the family who raised him for 18 months didn't know what they were doing. I don't care if it is a pet home, Police/SAR/Assistance, sport or any other kind of home, if they don't work out, they get returned to the breeder right??"

Actually police depts often get very proprietary about what they see as THEIR property and often do not play well with others(breeders) which impacts them when looking for donations and reasonable cost dogs. We would all love to see our dogs on the street doing a great job but I personally do WANT to know where they end up and if they don't work out have a say in where they are placed. Even the ones that work out - just trying to get info  and updates on them is next to impossible - again it's that proprietary thing ( plus that attitude you showed above of - yeah well we are the real thing so what should you have to say about it - duh w/o the breeders there are no police dogs. The army tried breeding their own because they KNEW they could do it better and it was a miserable failure). There was a big lawsuit up in Washington where one dog who should NOT have been a police dog just kept getting passed on and passed on and passed on as each dept wanted some money out of him and finally he was put in a situation where disaster happened. That's wrong and unfair to the dog, the breed and the community and most especially to the person who got hurt.

So yes in a perfect world they would be returned but this is far from a perfect world and all too often the Brittany's of the world would be turning a puppy over to a totally unknown situation. While a new home is always a gamble it helps to have as many ducks in a line as you can before sending that new pup on his/her great new adventure. All I was trying to say was lets apply a little thought to the process first.

By the way re the above notice if they are so "desparate" they ought to return phone calls.
