We would ask the owner to sign off on the dog, they did, and we called the local humane society or took them home ourselves and found them homes.
We do this too. :) We then say that they've gone into witness protection. We've got two hospital cats that are in the program. They were supposed to be Euthanized due to inappropriate defecation. Funny, both haven't done that since we've had them! Go figure, I think they are grateful to us for saving them. Both older cats, one has been there three years and the other just since September. Both live like quite the little princesses now too.

It seems that every vet clinic ends up with mascots, usually cats LOL.

Makes me wonder how clean the owner was keeping the litter box! :rolls eyes:

Brittany, There is a problem w/ "there ought to be a law" mentality. First and foremost you can not legislate morality. It just doesn't happen. Second what one man invents another can figure a way around. The best solution is education, education, education AND breeder responsiblity in keeping track of their pups and letting people know they are there if problems arise.
Years ago I had a beloved vet who told me that just starting out he was brought a healthy young dog to put down simply because the owner no longer wanted him. He tried to get him to sign him over but the owner was a stupid arrogant prick and would not. My vet refused to euthansia the dog. Later that week the dog was brought in by a good samaritian because it had been hit by a car - it did not survive. When the owner could not get his way with any vet he simply let the dog go on a heavily traveled highway. My vet said from that point on in a similiar situation he put the dog down because at least with him they were given a loving caring last few hours.
There are never simplistic solutions to complex problems.

No wonder so many of of us prefer the company of dogs to humans.

Yea, hospital cats are a little easier than hospital dogs. However, we've had a few dogs that we've had signed over and placed too.
