I am a little confused - is it pups under 6 months or is it pups without rabies vaccinations. My girl didnt need to have hers when she came to me in june, because she was 9 weeks and from Holland (a Rabies Free coutnry). She was under quarantine until 30 days after her rabies vaccination.
I am looking at getting my next pup from Germany or Austria (and I was planning on going over there and bringing the pup back as baggage) - so I am sort of curious what the actual law entails. Is there somewhere where I can look it up?
Thanks :)

Well if that is the case I won't be importing a pup. I want my pups at 8 - 9 weeks old, no older than 16 weeks.
Will we see Overseas Kennels having a Kennel in the US they work with, Kennel X - USA. Ship pregnant females in, pups whelped in the US, female goes back to Germany or where ever after pups are weaned. I know many breeders in Germany are limited to number of dogs they can have so, I can't see how they will be able to keep a pup for 6 months to sell to the US.
What a mess.

This is just insane. Why are shelters importing homeless dogs, when there are shelters in the US that are over run with them. That is what should be out lawed, not imported purebreed dogs from resposible kennels. When are we going to stop trying to save the world when we can't fix the problems here in the US. The shelters in the North should be proud, because their programs are actually working to reduce the over population of unwanted pets. But to import from overseas, is a slap in the face to shelters in the US that are still over run with pupping and dogs that are put to death every day. If they want homeless puppies all they have to do is come to Texas.

I know of a few breeders who do it for dogs going to Australia - and they need to be 9 months to be imported.
I imagine it will cost a good bit more - and it might behoove the new owner to make a couple of trips during the low season to go see the pup - but I will still do it - but again - I still really need to see the new law because I dont quite understand what the new regulations are.

Here is a link to the document posted online by the CDC requesting public comment on proposed rule changes for the importation of pets including dogs. http://www.cdc.gov/ncidod/dq/pdf/anprm.pdf
Unfortunately the comment period ended December 1st.

In regards to the shot, look at the laws of your state. In my case an 8 week old puppy could come in without the shot but 12 weeks was too old.
I read about this issue somewhere else. Big problem in California. People don't want to adopt older dogs - they want puppies - but there are not enough puppies in the shelters there. So they get puppies which eventually wind up in shelters as dogs.
There are plenty of puppies here as well. Seems like the law could just apply to shelters and that transfers between shelters would have to be documented.

Anyone been able to find a link showing this bill was actually signed into law?

Wow, what a pain. I too, like getting pups at 8 weeks. Does anyone know when it will become effective? I may have to pick out that next pup sooner than I wanted to. And I totally agree, what a waste of taxpayer dollars. I don't think the state of IL has had a case of rabies in what, 19 years?

if you read the link wanderer provided, I am also understanding the imports (no matter the age) will be limtied to certain airports. I forgot to count, but there are only a few of them.

Not quite as bad as GMA aired. Plenty or loop-holes to exploit!
