don...wait...damnit...im confused...

seriously...are your kidding? are or you serious...? do you think that but just kidding about making it sound like a bad thing? do you think that and think that it is a bad thing, is it something that bothers you? or you are pretending it bothers you?

shit, ive gone crosseyed...

lol...i just can never decide if you are really bothered by things and just deliver it with sarcasm or jokes....or if you are like my hubby and cant help but pick on things just because for some reason or another they strike you as silly, but not that it truly bothers you.....---and if thats the case...well i know im an easy target..lol...my hubby picks on me constantly...i have my blonde momments, alot.

ok...seriously...

maybe it sounded a little gushy or whatever to yall, but i did have some real questions in there...

i can't do sport or go to clubs or meet trainers...i dont even know anyone else that has a gsd....so there is no way for me to test my dog with other people judging like you do...and since im new to GSD's..and my opinion on the good and bad would be biased because he is MY dog....im just putting it out there for someone else to tell me what is REALLY good or bad.....like i said, i laughed at him for knocking the phone out of her hand, but maybe i should'nt have...maybe that can lead to a dangerous situation.....I thought it was good that he wont go with anyone without me,...but maybe that means he has seperation issues that i should try to correct....i don't know...

maybe it doesnt matter because he is just a pet.....but to me thats why it matters the most....this is a dog that is around my 6 and 7 years old kids....i actually swore before that i would not get a big dog untill my kids were older...but then boss came along and i decided not to be paranoid about big dogs around my kids...i've always had big dogs growing up so why could'nt they?........i figured as long as i raised him from a pup, and did things right, then my kids could grow up with a great dog....im just trying to make sure im doing things right, i ask for yalls opinion because i know that my own COULD be clouded by the fact that i do love this dog...

Actually, what you did with the running away thing is a good old training trick.  Sometimes young GSDs will start to "follow their nose" and not pay enough attention so a good remedy is what you did.

I agree with Sue. I do it with Baden all the time. If he is retrieving something and stops to sniff something else, I turn and walk away. Works like a charm. He picks up the object I threw and runs as fast as he can back to me. I wouldn't worry about the phobe thing, it didn't sound like he intended to hurt your cousin, just stopped her nonsense as you so clearly were trying to do. Sounds like your dog is very tuned in to you and that's always a good thing. As far as being clingy...do you ever walk him out in the woods off leash? Does he always stay near you or will he go out on his own sniffing and playing? Didn't you just leave him behind on vacation? How did he take that?

sue and 4-pack...thank you...

4-pack... he is almost always off- leash when he is in the yard with me....the back 'field' is plenty big enough and we live far enough from the main road......and no, he is not always by my side....surrounding  the back, is about 80 acres of nothing but pine trees....when we are back there the dogs go out into the woods some, on their own, but never to far.....they will come in and out every few mins....but when he does go off, if for some reason i start walking towards the house, even without calling him, he will come hauling ass out of the woods to go with me....but i wouldnt call him clingy either (my ratty roscoe is tho, cant walk without him under me).... boss is happy to go do whatever, as long as i stay in the area....

now as far as the vacation thing...oh boy..

we did bring him to my mother-in-laws house... spent about 30 min on the other side of her fence trying to get him to stop growling at sadie (his sister)....sadie had stopped growling at him about 15 min before , but boss just wouldnt relax...sadie was ready to play..lol..anyway, we were about to give up, figured it just wasnt gonna work...then the kids went inside the fence and started playing ball with sadie...that worked like magic! as soon as boss saw them playing he relaxed and wanted to play to......so we got the kids to get out of the way, put sadie on a chain, my hubby walked boss to her, with him on a leash....they just checked each other out for a while, they seemed good so we just kept letting them get closer slowly....sadie was standing, with a toy under her, and at one point boss reached to her , i was ready for the fight to start, but he just kinda slyly stole the toy out from under her...after that, the game was on, lol...we let them both loose and they played untill they couldnt walk.....everyone had to stay out of they way so the two crazies didnt knock us over....lol

anyway..you would think that after that everything was gonna be ok, but it wasnt.. about 3 hours after i left my mother-in law callled...we had to come get the dog...apperently he had not left the front gate since i left, he was trying his best to climb out, he wouldnt eat...and she was worried he would be like that all week....so we took him home and he stayed in his own kennel here...my hubbies grandmother kept him fed and watered (she lives next door)..oh and he gain weight , lol, she thinks healthy dogs are fat....also, my cousin from next door was out of school for holidays and would come let him out for a while and play with him.....and as far as i can tell he is fine, and he didnt freak out as long as he was home.....i hadnt wanted to leave him here because i thought my hubby's grandmother would have a hard tim when trying to give him water and food, i thought he'd try to get out when she opened the door...but she bragged on him about that...she said, before she would open the door that she would say, boss go lay down...he would go in his dog house and just lay there and watch her..wouldnt get up untill she went out and told him ok....shocked me...he tries to jump all over me when i go in there..but it all turned out well...

He sounds great. My dogs would probably struggle if I left them somewhere other than home too. Baden is pretty bad. One day I was at my friends and we had to go to  the store real quick for drinks. Baden didn't want to load up so I thought "OK I'll leave him at her house with the kids and her hubby". I couldn't get 1/2 way backed out of the driveway and he was ready to load up. Little baby. He's allot like Boss, a mommas boy, even play and toys don't come before mom, well maybe except bitework.  I get him on that field and he could care less if I'm right behind him or not. Don't worry about it seeming like a lack of confidence. Baden is very solid, confident and dominant, he is just very loyal to me as well. If Boss takes off in the pines for a few minutes but comes back to check in, that's perfect. I have had both, dogs that will run off leaving me in the dust or wouldn't go far enough on their own.

It's too bad you can't do something more with Boss. I'd love to know how he would do in a bitework or SAR. He sound like a real keeper! He will be the dog you and your kids will struggle to replace the rest of your lives, once he is gone.
