what does it do ?

by Mysti on 21 November 2007 - 06:11

It's poisonous, if they eat too much of it.

Hi Mysti,

I hope your dog is doing ok.  I dont know why but I never heard that before.  Your saying they will die from it?

how does it work, I mean what does it do to the dog?

I don't give my dogs chocolate on purpose, but.... the chocolate that you have to beware of is BAKING chocolate, not a candy bar.  I had a gsd once that ate about FIVE POUNDS of truffles (from a very high-end local chocolatier) and it didn't even phase her.  The 18 pound Scottie I had at the time, also got into a large amount of chocolate that I was planning to send to a friend.  She didn't even get the runs from it.

I cannot remember the name of the actual toxic portion of chocolate, but there is very little of it in candy bars or, apparently, truffles.  It IS found in baking chocolate, though.

Theobromine (chemically similar to caffeine and theophylline--in the methylxanthine family):

Louise,

I should have KNOWN that you would have the actual name!   I knew it began with a "T,"  but kept thinking of "the wrong thing."

Sure, Nia! There is a name for everything (cf., my discussions of priapism--in Kari Mendoza' thread)

I went ahead and posted the thread about Chocolates and other poisons here at the holiday season as evidently a lot of people dont know about chocolate and there is some in Milk chocolate and white but the dark chocolate and baking is the culprit....today a lot of people eat dark chocolat as the new health prognosis is tht dark chocolat for humans is healthiier for you....and does have some health benefits.....that and green tea and lemon and mint and lots of things, those of us a little older ,use to eat....
