Both dogs are tilted slightly. I would guess even though the xrays are off, they got fair for #1, Mr Stumpy (where is his tail LOL). The 2nd dog would have gotten a fail I believe.
I save the xrays to the desktop and use a photo application to blow them up. Makes it a bit closer to actual size. Will be interesting to see the results.
Drum rolll....

1st = Good
2nd = Moderate Dysplasia

The "flat spots" on the femural heads of the second dog are normal. That is where the ligament attaches to the joint capsule. OFA likes to see that as an indication the knees have been rotated inwardly. That will not prevent a dog from receiving OFA certification. My main concern with that xray is that there is some "cupping" at the cranial edge of the rim of the left socket which may indicate a loose fit and there might be some remodeling of the neck on that side.

Thanks for all the feedback. I do think it helps to look at more x-rays and get opinions on how to read them.
Now for the rest of the story...
We had these two done at different times and went different routes with them.
The male's mother was bred and born in the U.S. so did not have an SV registration, she had AKC only. For him we went OFA. Elbows were normal, hips were good. And yes he has a beautiful long tail, no stumpy there!
The female's parent were both imported from Germany and had SV registrations. We opted to send her x-rays to the SV for "a" stamp. Elbows were normal, hips were A2.

A2 hips ("fast normal") is roughly equivalent to OFA "fair".

the first x-ray is really good. very clear. no problem of any type.
the second x-ray is showing some problem on the right. the portion of the ball is not setting in completely in the acetabulam as a small gap is evident between the socket and ball. the bitch may be feeling some discomfort there. but with proper care her pain can be lessened by administring her glucosamine hcl.

smartboy

smartboy, the bitch is balls to the wall doing schutzhund. She is a true tough bitch. Her doc, who does the large city K9's here said no problem, work her! And he's been very known to fail dogs... Thanks for you concern but she's fine and dandy.

An A2 (or OFA fair rating) indicates a normal hip. Dogs with worse hips have run in and completed the Iditarod, the most gruely competiton in which any dog will ever compete.

Animules,
Congratulations on the passing ratings on BOTH your dogs!
