I hear you there Blitzen. Ive only just started earning SchH titles on my dogs. I doubt anyone cares to hear about agility, AKC conformation or obed. lol.

john, like this thread and will follow to see where it goes!

agar, i have a feeling we would get along great, that being said.

I am knew to this whole world, and it is a world of it's own. i'm not here to start anything, but to try and learn as much as i can. i'm almost 33 and getting a late start ! since i'm just starting, i would be the greenest thing anyone has seen! i would say i learn very quickly and am open to most anything. there are no sch. clubs around where i'm at now, but i did find a k9 officer/trainer that also does obedience so as soon as my boy is cleared by the vet we will start training ob there. i can't wait to move and go to the clubs in the tacoma/seattle area, i've been in contact with a few people from the board there and can't wait to give sch. a try. don't know if it's for me or my dog but we're going to see? if i like it and it's not for him then i'll find a dog it is for! no i'm not selling my boy, i'll just do something more fitting with him, psa, s&r whatever it is. winning might be great for some but having fun is winning to me. it's only a sport if it's fun ,is how i feel. when it's no longer fun it's no longer a sport ! or atleast to me. i will never talk down about another's skill or that of their dog! i only expect the same respect from others. if they can't give me that respect, i will find somewhere else to train! if i feel the need for a confrontation i'll volunteer for another deployment.  sorry to ramble.

sincerely, the newbie,

kenny

blitzen,

i would,,, my wife does a lot of akc events with her dogs.  we have also done irondog, and some bulldog events.  believe it or not german shepherds can do weight pull.  they are still one of the most versitile breeds.

we have done cgc's on most of our dogs who are old enough.

anyone ever done a TT?   its a temperment test that is breed specific and factors in any training your dog has had.  my wife did one at Purina Farms in St. Louis.  we are thinking about have one as an extra event for our clubs fun day.

i've been working with angus to get his therapy dog certification. i'm going to help w/evaluations in couple weeks and get a good look at what they want. altho we live in LA county, i'm gonna try for the orange county/delta society certificate. they are pretty tough - the application is 18 pages i think! angus has his cgc, so i'm pretty happy with him, but i think therapy work would be great. our mal/gsd (as far as we know) mix is very well trained, but she is more hyper and prey driven than angus, so i don't think she's a good prospect for therapy. pretty much nothing bothers my big beastie, but claire gets all wound up about things; they are night and day. i wish my son would get into agility with his dog, but at least they run most nights (he's in cross country and track) so she gets some good workouts and she's devoted to my son (good protection when he runs at night).

My original breed is the Alaskan Malamute, John, and all my accomplishments have been with that breed.  I've never showed a GSD at an AKC show. Still interested?

Yes, I did know that GSD's can weight pull, but most will never outpull a Malamute . I know a GSD breeder who ran her GSD's on a sled team too. This really is a versatile breed.

Kenny Welcome aboard.  Sit back, get your seat belt on and hang on things can get pretty intense around here and in the dog world. lol  But I think I like you already and with a little thick coat of skin I think you got the right attitude and you'll be fine.

No one was a greener as me when I got my first dog.  I had never even so much as knew how to hold the leash correctly. lol  I've come a long way and learned a great deal but still have so much more to learn as there is so much to know.  I too train with someone one on one- just feel for me right now I am more comfortable and get a lot more out of one on one than in a group setting.  My husband and I train every week and every week we work on something new so it never gets boring and repititious.  We have fun, the dogs have a great time and that's what it's about with us.  What is truly amazing to me is to watch the relationship our dogs have with us when they are out there training.  It really is a bonding experience.

We have 3 dogs although similar in many ways they are all different, get trained a little different and serve different purposes with the goals we've set.  The one thing they all have in common is that they are very much loved, respected and appreciated for what they are.  With that said, keep doing what you're doing.  With determination and patience you will learn a great deal in a short time with the right people to guide you in a positive way.  I think the most difficult part is sifting through the BS and trying to figure out who really knows their stuff and who is full of crap.  The rest will come easy.  Good Luck.

John,

I really liked Ally and her sister, Abby.  Yes, you met me at the Regional your club did such a great job of hosting.  I have put a 1 on a female and Bs on two other who will hopefully go for 1s this spring in Tulsa (or KC if we have moved by then!)  And my next trial dog is all of three weeks old in Tulsa with Susanne.  I think that my Bo will be my first 3 dog, Santo's leg just isn't going to carry him past a 1.  So, I have just got started but I'm on a roll now!
