Welcome

This is not an Uproar from the Anti-American crowd (I happen to own two very wonderful AM line GSDs) - but anyone who breeds without at least Hip ratings is just .... .
Gerald sent me a PM to the question I asked (why I don't know) - to say he does herding (I see no herding titles on the website) and said that if the stock isn't OFA's they are at least x-rayed....
Sorry - no matter what lines you breed - that ain't good enough for me!

Hello tighe
I am not here for your approval. LOL Your opinion is just that and sways me in no way. If I let my dogs just lay around my living room and never do anything but dog shows it is in no way your concern. Just as if I do not OFA a dog and only X ray it. That is the concern of myself and my puppy buyers. And in reality should have no interest to you. But there are people who worry more about what other breeders do and in doing so never focus on their own breeding program and never succeeded in any venue they perform with their dogs in. Good luck with what ever you do or do not do with your dogs.

But you see Gerald I am not a breeder - I am a puppy buyer so you should care about what I think and about what other GSD people think because otherwise you are simply breeding for the ignorant.
It is in all our best interests to check all health aspects of our dogs before breeding - it is also in the breeds best interest to test it's working ability - prove breedworthiness. Can't do that by having your dogs lay around all day. This is not my opinion, I just happen to agree with it.
Unfortunately too many Am. line breeders think that a Ch. title is enough - forget the x-rays, forget the temperament - movement and looks are all that count.
But - thankfully there are many breeders out there to choose from. Heavily inbred with no OFA and no titles just isn't what I'm looking for in a dog! LOL

Brent, what do you consider linebreeding? I consider a mother/son breeding an inbreeding not a linebreeding.

Hi MI_GSD,
Your right it is inbreeding. I consider line breeding following a certain bloodline usually thru the sire.
I have had a male breed back to his dam by accident. Or maybe lack of supervision. But I would'nt breed this way without very careful consideration of all the lines history.
I prefer the mixing of lines to improve genetics.
Brent.

Brent, how were your pups when that happened,
were there some really nice ones then some with cleft palate, or
severe hip dysplasia?
People have told me you can get really nice pups, but you also
have some no so nice pups.

I go by the Rittmeisters motto... "Utility and Intelligence..." Utility maybe the keyword to UNITE WORKING and SHOWLINES... As there is no more EAST and WEST Germany... As long as you understand that the GSD, (although from Herding Stock by origin), is designed to be a WORKING DOG and will remain a working dog, you understand the reason why it was created and you must breed by that principle as the Founder of the breed would like it...
Some people may not consider showing as a form of work... and I consider Sport dogs as not doing work( but just for the VANITY of the Subsequent BUYER...) So nevermind the ever demanding Buyers here in PDB... just continue with you breeding plans... Learn from History... Aim to breed better individuals than their progenitors...
I too am a breeder... and rely on bloodlines... we dont have OFA's here but being from the Medical field... I understand the need for GOOD HEALTH... TRAINING... keeping with the standards... and not simply Titleing (which buyers normally look for...for VANITY of course)
If we try even with our own little way to study and learn our breed (and that is intelligence...) fulfill the requirements before BREEDING... Even if its not available at least the equivalent in forms of ensuring HEALTH, PERFORMANCE, CONFORMATION and TEMPERAMENT to maintain the integrity of our BREEDING stock...
With inbreeding you're just trying to establish CONTROL... a good outcross to counteract the effects of inbreeding will stabilize the bloodline...
WELCOME to PDB... marci... :)

Ostrich breeding? Is that what it's called when you sit back and believe everything you're doing is right regardless?
I think there is enough luck in what we do so we should stack the odds in our favour :)
(and titling for vanity??) I'm sure everyone here who has ever titled a dog will appreciate that remark! I guess we should all buy are puppies from "German Shepard, no regstrtions but great puppys"
LOL
