MI_GSD

This is going a little off topic.  I just visited the Furnas website and noticed that the pups are CKC registered instead of AKC.  Is there a reason a breeder would chose to go with one over the other?  It looks like both parents of the litter are imports.

In my experience a correct medium size female at 3 months is generally 25-30 lbs. There can of course be considerable variation from these weights without being unhealthy. A GSD is a medium sized breed. Many are accustomed to seing large dogs, and will judge a medium dog from that perspective. If your pup is otherwise healthy and developing properly, small size is NOT a problem. Best Wishes, Jonah

My DDR Felsenschloss bitch weighed 39 pounds at 16 weeks and 41 pounds at 4 months (which is 17.5 weeks).  She is big  boned.

She is now 4 and weighs 77.  She'd be 70 if she were competing, but she is in trail hike shape, not SchH shape, right now.  She's 61 cm measured correctly (behind withers).

Your pup is either a very, very late bloomer or she has some digestive absorption issue or she is genetically small.  She'll be about 40 pounds at maturity.  As folks say, she could still be great, but I cannot believe it would be appropriate to breed her.  You are getting a replacement pup, so I assume she is to be spayed.

I just looked at her pic.  She's beautiful.

What are you feeding her?

Can you get her to eat at least 4 oz of chicken, one tablespoon of cottage cheese, plus two cups of excellent (very high calorie) dog food a day?  Are you making sure she is getting a good multivitamin (she may be deficient in something critical)?

I( assume you are doing your best to get her to eat and she just won't, no matter what you do?

You could go to Abady or Evo for high protein, low fiber food, to give her the best chance to absorb useful (instead of useless) calories.

EMTTGT,

The largest most promising male in my last litter was sold at 8 weeks. By 16 weeks he had fallen behind even his medium sized sisters in growth, and was quite thin.  I attribute some or all of his lack of growth to diet, as I feed all meat, bone, and vegetables, and his new owners switched him to kibble. Now at almost 8 months he is just over medium size, strong, in perfect health, and a top prospect. If your pup seems not to be getting adequate nutrition I would suggest a high potency feed such as Abady granulated. Raw meat is biologically appropriate and tasty, but is rather bulky if a dog has a lacking appetite. Best Wishes, Jonah

Two of our working line females, 3 1/2-years old and 2 1/2-years old, both weight 62/63 pounds.  Solid, compact bitches.

My 5 yr old Rikkor daughter is really a lean, medium female and is 60lbs soaking wet. She's a is super athletic though, and a little bullet. My Jaguar daughter at 6 is around 75+, she is a big girl.

Feed her steak, chicken, whatever it takes.  Find out if she has an allergy to somethnig in the food.  Feed her by hand.  Do what you can to stimulate her appetite.  Feed her in an air conditioned room.

If she just can't eat enough to grow, she's gonna be small.

Remember that commercial kibble is filled with fiber that does two things.  It is a filler to make the food cheaper.  It is a filler to make the stool firmer.  Both are bad for your pup.
