I don't know much about it but I think "red" is not sable but a black/red missing the markings (saddle etc).  I have seen them before.  Only DNA could tell you for sure if Mali is not mixed in, obviously this is the normal color/markings for the Malinios breed.

dead ringer for show lines? he's got ZERO rear angulation, i don't think so.

he's probably a VERY washed out black and tan or there is mal mixed in.

Always heard it called golden sable.

Thought sable (agouti) would have two tones on the hair? Like if you plucked a hair off of a sable dog, there'd be light and there'd be a dark end.

Maybe I just lost track of the conversation or are we talking about a different kind of sable? Thought there was only one "sable" in a GSD and ...its not that dog. Tervuren have "sable" (saw-blah or whatever) as well but its like a washed out pee color. Like, its not a gray and its not a fawn, kind of in between. And then there's the "sable" like agouti with the tipped hairs/overlay *shrug*

Looks like a show dog in the front view. Someone paint-shop a black saddle onto that pic and see how it looks  Looks like a mal coat to me...not the color alone, the texture. Kinda hard to see the detail. Is there a light scattering of darker hairs in the coat? And look at the difference in the color at the top of the neck just in front of the shoulder.

I dunno Marci, it does almost look like a fading black like you said, unless those aren't darker tipped hairs and its just my monitor. Weird. If they are not caring about pedigrees then it could likely be part mal. Would be way more interesting if you knew for sure it was a GSD, lol.

Uhh I'm more concerned about wtf is up with that cage...

ha, ok I need to read all the posts and not just skim them before I reply. Sorry :-)  Have had either too much coffee today or not enough, there's a fine line.

I rescued a starving mother and 6 puppies years ago - everything except her color told me she was purebred GSD (see for yourself) - she was this "golden" color with black mask.  Half of her puppies (also apparently purebred but ?????) were "golden" and the other half black/tan.  The family was obviously dumped at the shelter as I found them wandering through the Sam's Club parking lot, all of them emaciated and puppies full of worms.  Found homes for all of them too.

I think this dog is a red sable with a black mask. To be sure you would have to really look at the coat and see if the hairs are banded (or agouti) which they may well be.  Some may have a very tiny amount of black at the ends. In any case, the dog does not exhibit much black on the body coat, only the mask. IMO it may not be a purebred GSD, but you can't make that decision based only on its color.

Just took another look at the photos and this dog also has black hairs on it's tail making it a red sable.

Lucky for those pups and mother that you found them and kindly took them in, Molly. They don't look as if they'd have lasted much longer.

Some folks are just in need of a good killin'.

Just for clarification, if this dog was born in early January, it's on the young side of 9 months at the most, mid to late Jan would still be 8 months.
