My list is rather short.

My grandparents had a neat mixed breed named Mickey (which was my very first word, parents knew they were in trouble then!)  As a kid my parents had a white GSD names Kasak, then we also had a mixed breed called seamus, the first dog of my own as a kid was Blizzard, a sheltie.  My first dog as an adult was a GSD mix named Geronimo, then I got my first GSD, married into a Dobie mix :), then my first GSD, whom I still have was Nessa who's now almost 11, then I know have two additional GSDs, Lexie (2 1/2) and Ike (almost 6) and of course always thinking when/where my next GSD will be from!

As a child, I wasn't allowed to have a dog. We did have a cat, though.

When I finally moved out on my own, I was living in an apartment, and thought it just wouldn't be a good place to try to keep a dog. Then, I saw this pathetic bag of bones lying under the table in my uncle's farmhouse kitchen...

Lilli Marlene - GSD - euthanized at 9 yrs. due to problems with her spine.

Tasha - GSD - died at 14

Ranger -GSD - currently 5 years old

Star of Hope - GSD, currently 9 mo.

I actually consider Frekles my first dog even tho we had Happy first.  Happy was a hunting dog and lived outside in a kennel. Skippy (our pick of the litter from a breeding with Happy) died as a puppy from distemper, I think he was about 3 months but I was so little, would have to ask my parents.  Frekles was a house dog and was pretty amazing (and they say dalmations are dumb), knew what you were saying to him without actual commands.  My Grandma lived alone and close by, she'd be scared at night sometimes so she'd call us and say "Send Frekles up".  We'd open the door and say "Go to Grandma's", he'd be at her door within minutes and sent him back home in the morning.  He stuck to us like glue, pulled our sleds up hills for us, killed every snake he laid eyes on, put cigarettes out with his teeth if someone flicked a live one!  Would go and get anything you told him to.  He died when I was in the 4th grade, I climbed up on the shed roof and remember sitting there every day for about a week, it just tore my heart out!  He was my first canine soul mate.

as a kid - duchess and duke, big black mutts; then heidi, a miniature doxie

as a young 20-something, a boyfriend had a big gsd, 110lbs named tai. that dog hated most men, but was very protective around women. didn't like kids (kids had messed with him pretty badly before i met my bf). tai saved me one night from being assaulted (or worse). i was home alone at night and a guy came to the door. i opened the door, screen door was closed; he tried to sell me something, i said no thanks, he grabbed the screen door handle and started coming in, tai hit the door, teeth bared, growling and the guy took off into the night. in a way, he was my first gsd. (i hadn't thought about that in many years)

as an adult - cairn terrier named freebie; chow/husky mix named mad maxine, 2 of her pups - chow/husky/golden ret - lucinda and lucas (aka bubba). maxie was 67 lbs and her babies were 105 and 140 lbs. lucas had legs like small tree trunks. he loved to wear hats and shirts and he was my lap dog. he died about 6 months after a botched leg surgery at 8 1/2 ys. his mom lasted for 15 w/bad hd and his little sis lasted 15 1/2 yrs of old age.

slider, a jack russell. he was one of the funniest, smartest and most aggressive dogs i've ever owned. tried to get him obedience trained and we made it (barely) thru puppy class. got kicked out of the next class - he would go after every dog but especially the big ones. i got bitten so many times i can't count them all, but after he bit me in the face one night (cuz i moved him away from my son's pizza on a tray) and i ended up in emergency at 2 a.m. to get stitches, i decided to call it quits. we have a ton of great nieces, nephews, grandkidlets and i just couldn't risk it. had to have him put down at 6 1/2 years. that one hurt cuz i feel that i failed that dog somehow. about a week after, our gardner asked where the little dog was, we told him, and he then told us that slider had bitten him (he'd known him all his life!) and drew blood on his calf.

claire, a belgian malinois (maybe mix) from a shelter, tala a gsd from a shelter (we had to give her to a rescue cuz the girls were already gettng into fights - at 4-5 months). tala was (to me) really beautiful and i still miss her, but claire was our son's dog that we'd promised him, and i figured, any broken heart would be mine. she was adopted from the gsd rescue and i continue to support them. and then - angus! my sweet long coat gsd! love him, love him. i don't think i'll ever get anything but a gsd again.
