to those who give their dogs cooked bones and seemingly brag about not having any problems...what are you going to do if they do...you are going to feel like an idiot..because you have been told..dogs are CARNIVORES>. carnivores do not dine at kfc

by Langhaar on 12 September 2007 - 19:09

Carnivores also eat cooked meat..................

Well, I seem to remember something about if the cooked bones came from a fresh killed animal they are safer (not likely to splinter), as opposed to ones that had been previously frozen, before cooking.

Raw marrow bones are always recommended by this board and others, but my DH insists on a bit of cooking just to keep the flies at bay. Also, raw seems to give 'em the runs. I would never give him pork chop bones just because of its obviously sharp bone.

I agree with YRT.  Not because of the nutritional value............but because cooked bones splinter.  Never feed cooked bones.  Raw bones are fine.  Throw your bones away from the cookouts, barbecues etc.

I have a 14 month old female that can be a pain, so I give her a nice big marrow bone from the butcher at the grocery store.  Between the bone and the marrow, keeps her busy for  about...........an hour  :)

"Wingaling
Once upon a time there was a magical place called Wingaling and it had the best tasting chicken in the world. Nutty brown rice simmered in savory gravy that naturally marinates these delicious chicken wings on the bone to add flavor. The Merrick's would like to welcome your dog into this wonderland of flavor that is chicken paradise.

A NOTE FROM THE CHEF: please read before feeding. Our slow cooked whole chicken wings offer marinated tender chicken cooked on a softened bone. THIS SPECIAL COOKING PROCESS MAKES THE BONE MUSHY & SAFE FOR YOUR DOG TO ENJOY. Feel free to serve whole or to break apart the chicken and soft bones for ease of pet consumption." (from the above Merrick dog food link)

OH YUCK!!!!  Does that sound even remotely appetizing to anyone?

MMMMM-mushy bones...why not just soak 'em in vinegar...that will demineralise them and make them safe & mushy, too....but wait, isn't chewing and minerals the reason we give dogs bones??? Why not just stick to raw? I tried a lamb bone once with my son's mixed breed, a huge leg bone that was left after a roasted leg of lamb, it splintered so fast, & then I had one heck of a time getting all those splinters away from him! Not fun! jo

Also a big caution to those that think they need to go buy a big long thick ham bone commercially doused with a million bar b que   flavours from the pit of never never land,,,and soaked for hours in chemicals , and usually from out of country.,....will make one sick dog......any commercially sold dog chew bone   large , med, small or giant is also usually filled with nitrites and nitrates,    and dyes all over it....My sons dogs got one for his birthday month ago,  (Doggy Birthday) and didnt ask me , and his dog was nasty sick for a week.......he puked bone and gunk for 12 hours....

Many a vet have said many dogs brought in after injesting these commercial bones, ...You actually have no idea what they have been soaked in...

Just get bones from your butcher in the town that you know...or butcher your own....cow or deer......
