My pups have amble room .I use pine shavings and all litters always pick one specific area in the 8x8 inddor puppy area for their "bathroom " They do not smell however I do choose to give them all a bath before heading to their new homes.  Their outdoor pen is mostly dirt  summer pups jump in and out of the wadding pool and they do get pretty muddy , they get into all kinds of stuff  the flower bed  mulch etc Its amazing how much dirt comes off them when I bath them  for the first time :)) I have never encountered a problem bathing 8 week old pups  summer or winter  in Summer I towel dry and let them run around in the yard  in winter they get blow dried  and then returned to their indoor puppy area.

Up to the age of 3weeks I use newspaper because mom still cleans up after them I find newsparer make a huge mess after the pups have reached the age where mom does not clean them up  . They can step in their poops even with shredded paper I have had a problem them stepping in it .

I do not like the wire cage setup at all due to the limited space for the pups plus it can not be very comfortable walking on meshed  flooring.

My grooming room cages have a thick rubber meshed cage floor  they are awesome because the openigs are small and the rubber coating makes it very comfortable for the dogs to lay walk and sit on. However they do not make them big enough to house an entire litter of babes :)

We do give our baths before they go to new homes,  But only because it makes the new owners feel better,  We use a flea treated shampoo,  for those just in case...   We do get them every now and then as all the shelter dogs are only 20 feet from our perimeter fence for our dogs,  fleas can and will travel, LOL.      But for the most part,  I still avoid bathing pups due to the stress and high exposure levels we have here,  We have to be MORE cautious here than most breeders because of the shelter animals.

I agree with yellowrose, I have always bathed all my pups, most of the time they all get baths whenever some one comes to look at them.  Who wants to buy a poopy puppy!!  ;-)  I like them smelling good and clean when they leave to go to their new homes.  I have never had any problems with any of them not liking a bath either, they love it and they love the water.  They all love the creek out back.  At about 4 weeks is when they start getting yucky, of course I also keep my pups inside until they get their first set of shots, then I start allowing them to go out.   I don't see any problem with bathing them at 2 months old.  Good luck with your litter of babies.

My babies had a quick bath today, They are just learning to eat from a bowl and OMG were they messy and they STUNK! Cant have babies smelling like sour milk or sour canned food. I do have blow dryers tho and they were imeediately dried. It was a light bath, just to get rd of the worst of the mess, they will get a better bath this weekend probably.

Be caareful bathing befoe the shots are given   , mean the first one......just diaper wipe them...I dont bath pups until they are 6 weeks old..I like the wire cages built here at Cage works for me.....big  roomy , and Ive always raised them on wire after 4 weeks old...my pups eat so much , dry food and raw meats , they poop enough to fill a garbage can in one day....In no way would I allow them to walk in it, eat it and roll and play in it....I dont have anyone to stay in nursery 24/7 to monotor them.....the pile in the pull out tray , in several hours is horrible...I put two pups together and they stay together until they start to fight , badly....then I switch out , and eventually put one per cage...Ihave these cages built by Canton Cageworks......and they are all stacked and in an a/c nursery....no fleas , no flies , no ants., and not harm   .....go outside in play pens with pine shavings, pens that have been prepared with sevin dust first , sit and then shavings....water attached to sides....no food or feed in pens or outside .,,,,,,too many flies,  and any food that falls on ground is a draw to ants..also..

Bathing a pup doesnt stress it,,,or shouldnt   ,,,by the time they are 5 weeks old , they are listening to screaming, radio , tugging , banging on walls, creatching on walls,  walking of carper, wire ,shell ,grass , jumping logs, and walking thru leaves.,,,banging garbage can lids....umbrellas opening,,,,,,,,,,stomping feet, gun shots, big dogs barking and growling at them as the walk by their individual cages,   and they dig in their water bowls and even pic them up and roll and throw them at 6 weeks old.....

A bathe is only one more achievement to meet the real worild.....mine are clingey to me and I hold them close to me as I use a regular hair spray hose in a big wash basin in the  mud room.....they get over scared by me talking to them and acting silly....and playing with them......

Shandra   I would not bathe ur pups any more till the are a little older.....they have had a tough of it...and not quite ready   give shot one first...and imprint them     now I have held a pups feet under a tep=id  faucet if It got horrible covered in pooop or something bad....but not a real bath   I diaper wipe...

And my pups are the kind of wire that is coated and specially made for heavy pups and they havae tugs and old socks tied to the sides...I am not interested in them walking on pee and poop and I have other things to do besides stand over them and keep them  clean..I never have had sick pups or dogs...My 10 year old cocker went to the vet for the first time yesterday for a mammalary gland tumor....a common thing in older female cockers....shes up and running and had a nicer oatmeal bath when she got  home and she in the computor room with me....she doesnt act like anythings wrong....she ate big supper and is in her wire kennel watching Abby stare at her...Abby doesnt understand a cocker yet, as she has only been back home for one month.... I go to community  clinics every year for rabies and have never had vet bills....I only use the vet for checks on a litter , before putting them up for sale,,,and OFA and accidents they get in...if any.....

...This liittle tug biter has had three baths in four days.....they found a mud puddle,,,,,,,then ran thru the burn pile....in the woods...

Echo meadow and some others  have to be kidding me........stop talking and listen for a minute......     you been on this site too long to say these things... You over vaccinate...get with the times..My pups at 6-7 wks will cross a small stream following their mother or I...And depending on the weather I wont even dry them!!   And I dont vaccinate till 8wks! What lines do you guys have?  Dainty American lines? I can only imagine what food you feed as well? I feed them raw food from weaning time on... can you believe that? Never a sick puppy in 10 litters!  We are talking about german shepherds . Babying the dogs like that I can just imagine what big baby's you create as adults. Jade...well put
