Working Dogs

ts342003,

For Police K-9's You're far better off looking here www.k-9classifieds.com and asking some of the guys there that specialise in what you are looking for, rather than just the sport dogs you often see. Quite fancy the Dogo Argentino myself.

As EKvonEarnhardt mentioned, for LEO K-9's the first I thought of was von Grunheide Shepherds

Breeders that are experienced breeders and have titled proven stud and dam,,can tell you ,if this is a second, third or more litter out of these pedigrees, most certainly they are temperament and what their drives are....a 7 week old already showing their stuff ,,very much so,,,in a work line ........

It would be interesting to see the statistics for all the working dog breeders in USA.

There are  few breeders in this country who continue to produce pups that go on to be titled dogs decade after decade... and too few working homes to place one's good prospects in. THAT, IMO, is the biggest problem for a working dog breeder.  Unfortunately, unless a breeder gets out and competes with their dogs, successfully, on the national level, the chances of placing their pups in working homes are not very good in the first place. How many good prospects have we sold to people who swore they would train and title their dog, only to lose interest or fail to find time in deference to family, work, other obligations?

Unless we promote the sport as a whole, the future is grim indeed for those of us who breed fine dogs on a small scale becomiing a working dog breeder of reknown merit.  Sad but true.

SS.

Great response!!  AMEN!!

A true working dog is one that is going to be hard pressed to be in the house/companion ( he/she will be bouncing off the walls and drive you nuts in the house). IMO

I think you are thinking about Malis and not shepherds.

I agree, I can't speak for malis but one of the good things about GSDs is the off switch!  One thing, I just got back from vacation, I had my young GSD with me.  He is very high drive, but I guess being use to it, I don't notice it so much, I just think he's fun.  A friend who was along for the ride asked me if my dog was "always so hyper crazy".  Maybe through others eyes our dogs do appear a little nuts!
