I don't want to start a flaming discussion on this board by comparing dogs here. You asked opinion about Tiekerhook Dogs and Kennel so I gave my opinion because I have bought a dog from Tiekerhook and I was a satisfied customer.

I have had a very deep and personal relationship with Koos and known him for quite some time. So I can vouch for the man and his dogs.

Everyone is entitled to their own opinions. I'm not  too big a fan of Karthago lines. But then you should do your research and find out.

Tiekerhook's strongest points are the Strong / Hard Tiekerhook bitches. The bitch has a very lasting effect on the first 8 weeks of the pup's life.

if you want my inputs further we can take this offline.

mcraft,

$3,000 for a workling line puppy is not "typical" (at least not yet thank God).  There are many good breeders in the US of A if you decide to stay local.

The other pair you mentioned are from Dean Calderon, another big name in the sport.  I have no idea what his prices are, but "not cheap" would be my guess.

Do your homework, and decide for yourself how much you are willing and able to pay.  Unfortunately, coughing up big bucks for an expensive puppy does not guarantee a podium dog.

How many Tiekerhooks have been on the podium anywhere? I guess I missed them. Not talking progeny from other kennels either.

I would like to know the same thing, i.e., if Tiekerhook dogs are so great then how come we don't see them compete at any top competitions.  Is it the price of the puppies that is stopping top competitors from buying those puppies?  Is SV wrong in not allowing a 2-2 line-breeding and Mr. Koos Hassing right in doing 2-2 linebreeding on his dogs? There are a lot of good U.S. and Europeon breeders who breed very good dogs and sell their puppies at more reasonable prices, perhaps you should consider buying a dog from them.  If a breeder is breeding as many dogs as the Tiekerhook kennel produces, how could you possibly support the puppy buyers!!!  These are all valid concerns that a potential puppy buyer should think about, don't just get blinded by a kennel name, not Tiekerhook, and nor any other kennel name.  Also find out as much as possible about the parents and the siblings of the parents before buying a pup.  Don't forget that you have to honestly assess your own ability to handle a good dog, and evaluate the traiing system around you.  If you can barely handle a Toyota Carolla, don't go looking for a Ferrari GT.  All I am advising you to do is think hard before you buy your puppy.

What other top kennels can you recommend as alternatives?

by Patiala on 31 August 2007 - 03:08

I have no idea who you are, where you live, what club you train with, and what your preferences are?  Good kennels have their own stamp on their puppies and it is very distinct.  So if you have confidence in my opinion, please either call me or do some more research and work with another experienced member on the list that you can trust.

Mcraft,

Just wanted to comment on the Verdi X Cleo litter you are thinking about!  That is Dean Calderon's litter and I see Verdi work OFTEN!  Dean has said Verdi might even be better than Rex!  I also see a couple of Rex X Cleo puppies (they are nearly 2 years, I think) and they are turning out to be VERY impressive dogs.  That was Dean's first litter and all his litters are very nice!  I just stand in AWWWWE when I see Verdi work though!  That is one SUPER dog!  I would have a puppy out of that litter in a heartbeat!  So now you will have to decide if you want a dog that is Tiekerhook or a dog that is predominantly Karthago lines......Dean has much favor for the Karthago lines:)  I know Dean and Karla pretty well and Dean is much like Koos.....he will flat out tell you if your dog is a "turd."  He likes that word, LOL!  Also a Shitter!  I don't know what is worse, a turd or a Shitter!  LOL!  Good luck with whatever you choose!  You will not be disappointed by either kennel!  The advantage of using Dean is that he is located in OOOOOklahoma....where the wind goes blowing down the lane!

Keep us posted whatever you decide!

Mcraft:

Yes, which ever one you choose , it will be a good choice...I just buried an Orthos v Tiekerhook grandson....with Anika Fuerstenburg as the Dam,   Heidi Landau's female.....

Othos was 1991 N Amer Police dog ch., also ScH Nat Police  Dog runner up and 1992 North Am Police dog ch,( Manchester , NH) among other titles..held    a podium dog....and a K-9 delux in the end....

Tieherhook is one of the hardest , highest fight and prey drive lines to work with...Just know that  , I dont know if you should maybe look at Deans line, because hes here in the USA and he is the King of the Schutzhund gsd.......and can be of hands on help ......for your first gsd,,,,,if you are new in this.....if you have experience ,, then go with the Tiekerhook,,,,,,they are one of a kind....I have a female that is non stop drivey,,,not a family dog....she would wear family members to a frazil......they wouldnt understand her........I produced her then sold her as a pup, then her owner died..and I have her here.......wound up and ready to explode with work......drive...she is non stop 24/7 .hard headed and deteremined to do it her way....thinks she got me bossed ,,,,I just put her up and wait till she settles , then let her out...

She belongs on a police force as a narc dog....her nose and legs would out run and out sniff the usa army....

Good luck and let us know what you get....

I think what everyone has said is very right. If you can barely handle a Toyota then don;t look at a Ferrari. Tiekerhook dogs are one of a kind and there are people out there who are no match in handling a Tiekerhook. Thats probably a reason You haven;t seen a Tiekerhook in US nationals.

But wait it will be soon when you see that too. Often times a handler is not able to take the spirit of a great dog to the highest levels. Its the handler mistake not the dog.

The fact that you started this discussion by asking about Tiekerhook kennel and its sanctity gives the impression to everyone here that you are new to the GSD world. If that is the case a Tiekerhook may be too much to handle but then hey its your confidence level. If you are uptoi it  GO FOR IT!!!!!

They don;t say " Tiekerhooks are solid as a Rock" for nothing.

Vikram:

To prove a point,,,,,I had the man dig an 8 foot hole to bury Austin in , because I was afraid Id look out one morning and see the dirt pushed  away and him sitting with his 40lb. log, waiting for me to throw it...

I sit now on the front porch and drink my coffee, and can see him running across my front acreage , fast as lightening, with only one thing on his mind......a log and ,or, a  ball, to drop at my feet or in my lap.....with the intensity only a Tiekerhook has.
