goldenelk, maybe your talking about the post i made on the thread titled pit attacks baby, if you are , then yes thats what i meant by it...i think the GOOD owners would agree with that. if it were GSD's i would not mind at all to have to do that, i have no record, i don't mistreat my dogs, i dont let them terrioze other people,...so i would have no problem with it if it meant the bad guy with a GSD couldn't do all those thing and give MY dog a bad name.....

^^ I actually saw that thread after replying to this one, also the horrific video of the elderly couple being mauled.

I agree with you in regard to also requiring licensing for GSD's...hell, I'll take it further and say everyone who goes to buy or adopt a dog should be required to at least attend a basic dog care course, obviously such a legislation would have a poor chance of passing.

I could see that.  You have to pass a test and have a licence to drive a car, carry a concealed weapon, or most any other activity that might be a hazard to J Q Public.

But the politos would just turn it into another way to raise money.  Like making it mandatory here in VA for vets to notify the county when they give a rabies vaccination.  Then the county sends you a bill for your dog licence.

After watching that mauling video I have a serious question: What do you do if you are about be attacked by a dog and you have no gun or mace to fend it off? I've heard "theories" such as kick it under the muzzle, yell at it to "sit" or "stay" in the loudest voice you can muster, hitting it ontop of the nose with a fist, etc... I can't even begin to see how any of these remedies would deter a pit in full rage? Tips?

goldenelk....i've also heard the punch in the nose, but i doubt that would work with a pit...i think if a pit comes after ya, your just shit outta luck..lol,

but seriously, very good question... i would like to know myself if anyone has any idea...and  what would be the best thing to do if one attacked you kid or somene else?

You could consider placing your head between your legs and kissing your ass goodbye.

by GoldenElk on 22 August 2007 - 19:08

Ok, noted. Any other suggestions if your not ready to give in so easilly?

by GoldenElk on 22 August 2007 - 19:08

...another one some guy told me is if its a small to mediums size dog, and you know you are going to get bet, it's better that it get your arm. He then went on to describe some way of forcing the dog down on the ground and snapping it's neck...it was convoluted as hell. Some how I doubt he evr had the opportunity to actually test the idea out.

I would protect my most important parts. That guy who fell to the ground, I kept yelling "get up you idiots before he gets to your face, head, neck". Stay on your feet no matter what. I would stand facing the dog and as he came in for the bite, put one hand in his mouth grabbing his tongue the other hand going for his eyes. Put your hand either down his throat or pull his tongue out of his head. Poke his freaking eyes out so he can't see and if he lets go, you have a chance to run away successfully. I envision this scenario every time I come across a loose dog, no matter the breed. If I am going to get bit, I will take it in the arms or hands and protect the vital parts of me.

I though the Russian woman on the other thread had a thing going there, with the dogs back legs. If she kept swinging him around enough, he would have gotten dizzy. I'd be looking for a thick tree to swing his head into, possibly climb quickly, a safe place to put up, chain link fence to climb, a place to lock the dog up, before I let go of his ass end. No way to get to a dogs rear end unless he is occupied with some one or something else forst so thats not really an option anyway.

Since all of you seem to think that you will be attacked by a Pit. Dogs ears, even APBT are very sensitive. Grabbing and twisting as hard as you can will bring them off of what ever it is they might have. Dogs feet are also responsive to pinching but the ears are better because you have more control over the dogs head ( even if cropped). Don't panic, if it is a Pit size dog you should have no problem forcing it to the ground. Be sure that you grab one leg that is on the ground side. This will prevent the dog from getting back up. Most dogs even Pits will back down from a fight in unfamiliar territory. Use a loud voice and stand your ground. Never run from a dog!!! My neighbor has a very large mastiff mix that got out while my daughter and I were outside. He was very aggressive when he approached. Barking, growling, when I used a firm voice with him he became more aggressive. Since that was not working i used the high pitch happy voice. I told my daughter to stay far behind me. he came to me and i was able to stick my finger thought the end part of his chocker. I gently lead him to his home 2 homes down. The whole event was nerve racking because the never relaxed. Hackles were up the whole time. Never leave you kids unsupervised Teach them what to do if they meet a strange dog Never panic
