4Pack I didn't check out the link but I have made them and it sounds like the ingredients it calls for. My dogs actually don't think they are that great.. I feed RAW so maybe that is why. I wonder about the amount of molasses it calls for?? Maybe it is why they go "Ewwwe, to sweet" ! Wheat germ is just that the center more or less of the wheat berry. It looks like little brown flakes of , hmmm, bran maybe. The last time I made it I used Kaykohl Lands recipe, pretty similar but had canned pumpkin and can't remember what else was different. Well I was also using a supplement and I think I overdosed on carotene (vit A stuff) and my boy got red spots in his black saddle!! At least I think thats why, we went on a road trip so I made it for convienience. I quit using anything with that for awhile and his saddle came back black.

gsdlvr2 It is alot of hamburger, you can make just hamburger form a ball. But is has alot of eggs and Total cereal , sticky molasses, small jar of wheat germ etc. I never gave a thought to it that the knox had anything to do with it binding. It is a very little bit compared to all the other ing.

Balls schmalls. When I get done making mine, they look like a steak in each bag. Some of the other ingredients should help give it a consistency like the oil. As long as you even it out, that's all that matters. I use the 10 pounds of beef and other ingredients and then divide into 10 bags.When I'm done,it looks like a kindergartener made it. But my dog loves it.

I add a container of plain yogurt and a container of either cottage or ricotta cheese when I make it for my dogs.

So, I've wondered this for a while regarding these things. Most of these ingredients are things that would make me cringe in a commercial dog food. Can you give this to any GSD who doesn't have a specific food allergy to an ingredient? Do you feed this as a primary food or a supplement? If a supplement, is that why it's okay to give these ingredients? Because it's not a large amount a day? Is DR really a redneck? Will DRFNO be wondering if I was referring to him? Will Sue change her mind about the camels?
Oh, sorry. Flashback to Granma's soap operas. Really do want to know about the satin ball ingredients though.

This would be a very expensive meal if it was the sole diet. I make them and use them when I need to put weight on fast, help maintain coat when a blow is inevitable, and if we're on the road and the dogs act like they want to go off their food.
I have added the plain yogurt to help keep healthy bacteria in the digestive track and my dogs have kept good stools.
I don't make them into 'balls', I just put it in zipper bags or plastic bowls with lids and feed a 'wad' twice daily, depending on size of the dog and how much regular food they eat, typically a handful. If they're not eating their regular food well, then feed a bit more of the satin balls.

dawgs, no you shouldn't feed Satin Balls as the main course day in and day out. It is like birdwing said they are for. I first made them because they were suppose to be a to die for (for dogs) food. Well my dogs way back then didn't think they were that great.All have since passed.
I recently made them for convienence because we were going on a short road trip and it would be easy to bring in a cooler (I normally feed RAW) and also for my son to feed the two dogs left at home. Well the dogs I have now didn't think it was so great either. Maybe I am a bad cook, maybe my dogs are nuts. Dunno... But as for the ingredients. It is suppose to be complete and balanced so you can just feed it without adding anything else. I just cannot understand all the molasses.

You know, I was watching another, (new) dog training show, called, It's Me or the Dog, with a British lady named Victoria Stilwell, (on Animal Planet), and there was this super fussy eater made so by its clueless owner. To get the dog to eat like a dog and not a spoiled brat, she added garlic to the ground beef as a way make to make it more palatible and appealing.
Of course I'd much prefer to eat garlic over molasses any day, but that could just be me.
