"I am myself an ethical vegetarian who contributes to PETA and PETA like causes. My religious conviction is that I should do least harm to all feeling creatures, and this is consistent with that principle."
You could accomplish that same goal by contributing to the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals or one of its state affilliates. The ASPCA promotes responsible individual pet ownership, and does not endorse legislation that would ban breeds or breeding.
PETA on the other hand is an organization whose goals are murky at best. There is a track record there of supporting anti-breeding legislation that would establish wholesale bans rather than make the individual accountable for his or her actions. I would say that I doubt most PETA members themselves are quite as radical as their leadership - I think in many cases they are well-meaning folks who have been sucked in by what amounts to very clever propaganda. But the bottom line is that the leadership drives their policies, and you can be certain that Schutzhund is on the leadership's radar as an activity they will someday seek to ban.

MVF,

Every "cause" has its zealots including the environmentalists who are now targeting the gas guzzling vehicles some choose to own.

MVF, you are indeed a propagandist. What further enlightened comments do you have for this thread? You appear to be in the minority (a zealot who wants to legislate moral decisions affecting the majority--which includes responsible breeders). If you have dogs, do you breed or train/title them? No, I thought not. To do so would be "exploitation" of the "powerless".
What gives any individual or the government the right to decide who is a responsible breeder--so long as the breeder maintains good husbandry practices (which you will not witness in puppy mills) and is not abusive? Most responsible breeders do not have licensed kennels and do not derive their livelihoods from breeding dogs.
A cow (which you would no doubt describe as a "feeling creature") in its great wisdom does not "decide" to be a dairy cow. Is the dairy cow exploited? Is the chicken exploited for its eggs?
I personally have a friend who trains dogs for retriever trials. Unlike people who fight dogs/chickens/bulls for blood "sport", retriever people shoot and eat the ducks they kill. A good retriever dog has an extremely "soft" mouth in which he carries a dead bird--he does not kill it himself.
With this in mind, even when PETA people and other AR activist organizations publicize Vick's outrages, they do so with the ultimate goal of gaining additional donations for funding their hidden agenda. However noble their motives may be in the first instance, I would never make financial contributions to any cause supported by zealots.

Let's not forget the extremists who have been poisoning dogs at shows, deciding in THEIR infinite wisdom that the dogs were better off dead than "expoited" in that way. Recently a whole kennel of French Bulldogs was wiped out by these nut cases. No one comes near my dog at shows anymore. The cute kid who wants to pet the pretty Shepherd? Forget it! I hate that I have to be that way but would feel even worse if I came back with a dead dog.

PETA has also taken credit for going to the vehicles in the parking lots at large AKC dog shows and letting dogs out of their crates to run free!
