Can't beat a good face to face guard, lol.

Would you look at this as safe for the dog if he was to go on to a military or psd career???

by GSDfan on 17 July 2007 - 12:07
I agree with you a rear guard is safer for a dog in "real life", I just liked the pic, lol.

Jeff
My only thinking was that someone stated this was a "hard hitting video". I am not saying that the dog is weak or anything of the sort. I just wanted to point out to the viewers with less knowledge, that ask what the difference between prey and defense, that most of these exercises were not challenging the dog very much. If you go look on the Sch video post, I have made comments there too. I am not putting down anything, simply pointing out facts.
Do I think it is safe for a military or psd career to do a frontal guard? I guess my question, Is it safe for any police k9 to do a hold and bark on a perp? If I am going to send my partner onto a man who possibly has a gun, knife, or any other weapon, I am going to send him in for the take down. There is no other reason to send a dog. I mean, why would you send a dog on someone who is just standing there? He is not going anywhere. I have seen too many cases where police have not cross trained their k9's and they did a hold and bark, only to get shot.

Dunno about you but just about every K9 apprehension I've seen on TV....its'... dog goes in and bites, guy screems, handler takes his time (lol)....then chokes the dog off the perp, LOL. The hell with H&B's, outs and guards...this is all we need!

I was thinking more military, and did not point that out. I agree, if a cop tells you to come out, and you are dumb enough to ignore him, then you are dumb enough to get bit. : )

I don´t think that KNPV dog would have any problem with a SCH guard if it was taught it that way, or? Much of what we see in competitions is conditined responses to certain situations and not telling all there is about a dog I guess. By the way, what do the SCH-dudes think about this SCH-dog, movie below,

Jennie
I don't think too many on here believe that a KNPV dog would have a problem with a Sch guard. When I commented on the guard, I was only explaining that there isn't the same amount of pressure as a frontal guard. It wasn't to impune that dogs ability, just a statement. I explained also that the other two exercises on the video were escape bites. Also lower pressure on the dog.
The video is fine. In some spots it is hard to see grips because of interference. I always like to see the dog go into the blind at a bigger trial because the helper and setting is new. I also like to see the courage test. I like to see the dogs reactions to being challenged. The escape does very little to that effect. From what I saw the dog looked nice. Good, controlled hold and bark. Escape a bit slow, but I have been watching a lot of Malinois lately. All I could see were full grips. Outed quickly. Very nice!

Jennie.
I did not see anything special, and I don't mean that in a bad way. Just looks like an OK dog. I would have liked to see a bit more commitment on the transport bite. I stopped watching there, as what was the point.

Gee Jeff you're stingy with the nice words aren't you?
Jennie, very nice dog...he looks like a high score-er, good luck with him!

Melanie
