Do Right and Fear No one,  just wanted to take the time to say Thank You for an excellent post !!

Sueincc,  Makes some very Valid points,  Thank You.

SchHBabe,  oh my gosh that is tragic...  broke my heart to read your post,  I hope you luck gets better !

angusmom,  well if by fix you mean fix a displastic issue...For us,   Then I would say dependant upon the severity,  If it is severe enough to need surgery No I would not,  actually if it was a severe case I would likely keep that dog until it's life was no longer of Quality,  meaning if the dog starts hurting,  he's gonna be PTS.  If it's a mild case then I would simply make the individual aware of the situation, give them instructions, and per our contract the dog is to be seen by Vet for yearly health check and we are to receive copy.  Also we have full disclosure to the vet and would be speaking with them regarding quality of life, pain management,... When the time is right,  We do have the capacity per our contract to force the issue of PTS with the best interest of the dog in mind and we make the purchaser aware of this and give them explanation for it being in the contract.  If you meant Fix by spay or neuter,  sometimes we do it here, sometimes we have it done by purchaser within 30 days.

Thanks for the truthfullness from all.  It is disappointing when "it" happens.  Reminds me of an old saying I have heard several times.  "Man makes plans and God laughs".  One of my two females came back from OFA as Moderate Dysplasia.  Funny thing is, if I had to pick of my three GSD's which might not get a passing grade from OFA, she would have been the last one I would have picked.  She is the most athletic, most active and looks the best in her movement.  She is also the smallest of the three and has the best conformation.  She is two years old and I am going to try another vet, just to make sure, but I observed the x-rays myself and it does not look as good as the other two.  I hope it was just a bad job of positioning.

I would like to commend those above and those that did not post, that think along the lines of what Trailrider stated " Hell could freeze over before she will go anywhere, no matter what goes on with her physically or mentally!".

Ya know, many on this site get attacked regularly, like EchoMeadows, Brittany and some others, but if what I have read from their own writings on this site over the past year is the truth, they deserve praise for at least these things (and I am sure we have not heard the half of it):  They care about the dogs in their care and after they have moved on to other homes, they also take excellent care of their dogs, and they are not too busy to help others with their dogs (and several dogs being taken care of properly is a full time job).  I commend Echo, Brittany, and others who names I can not recall at the moment, for these things.

While I am at it, I find it strange that some on this site, generally seem to be "looking for a fight" whenever they post on a thread, no matter what the subject.  I find these persons very knowledgeable, intelligent and articulate but always "spoiling for an argument on the smallest point of contention.  I know they are reading this, so I ask "spook101", "seriously" (these two may be the same as their grammer and sentence structure is very similar, but of course they could just be "two peas from the same pod"), "sueiinc" (to a lesser degree), and the silly named (yes, I am familiar with the movie it came from) "show me your weiner".   Chill a little fellows and gal/s.  In the big scheme of things, the stuff on this site just ain't that important.  Your own dogs, your health, your country, and most of all, your family and your relation with your God.  These are the important things.  HD, hair length, color, titles, and all that other "stuff" is cool to research and debate, but not cool to denegrate other persons who have a common interest with you.  In other words dudes and dudettes, lets debate without the words that have these symbols in the middle of them (*&#@*&).  Can we do that boys and girls?  Hmmm

Okay.  I bet a dollar with everyone reading this, that I will be attacked for mentioning these things and these nicknames.  Wanna bet?  Hmmm!

This post is great but makes me angry and one of the reasons that I have had to hold my tongue   One of my males was bought from the man I cant stand and he lied to me and cashed the check, which I still have, and it went into his bank account, his wife typed the contract, knowing I drove all the way accross the US of A to buy a stud to replace one that got stolen and sold by the honorable crook from Houston...Xrays done at two  and guess who had bad hips.....when they came back , my vet put them on micro film, sent them to him , and he called me everyname he could think of, a trashy white girl , in a trashy truck pulling a trailor full of crappy dogs  came  to my house and she took a dog i didnt sell her and now she wants a replacement  because the hips are bad.....waaah waaaah    we didnt sell you a dog,  a girlfriend  is responsible for that dog, and you take it up wiht her.....LIKE HEll SHE SOLD ME THE DOG   SHE NEVER SHOWED HER FACE, AND i WAITED 24 HOURS IN A MOTEL IN TOWN FOR HER TO BRING A COPY OF PEDIGREE AND THE BLUE PAPERS,   NEVER SHOWED , AND THIS SO CALLED BREEDER OR WHATEVER HE CLAIMS,,,AGENT FOR IMPORTING AND SELLING GERMANS SHEPHERDS....REFUSED TO SIGN CERTIFIED MAIL FROM ME OR MY VET......THE PRICE TO ME    AT THAT TIME  $ 800.00 PLUS A TRIP ACROSS THE US AND THREE MOTEL ROOMS AND LIES AND INSULTS.........I just happened to be driving a brand new $35,000.00 gmc 6.4 gmc diesel .   paid for free and clear , and pulling a trailore with top quality german shepherds , and made it plain to that person and his wife, I was replacing my stud......Oh , and when I ask to see the female,,,,His reply,   You know my reputation,,,you just have to take my word for who she is and what she looks like,,,BUll corn.,,,and the woman , who supposidly had her,, never showed up........so you want to know , my experience   and what did I do....Im not rich, nor do I havae a money tree at my house,  and I hate dishonest people,,,,,,I hear it all the time on this site,,,,ripped off by a broker, or breeder.......My vet was also furious,  and my only recourse was to sue him and drive all the way accross the us to do.it....did I  ,,,of course not,,,,wouldnt have done any good........and cost more than another pup from someone else that honored his word......and I called the Head of Schutzhund USA and told him ,,,his reply   I bought one from Him , also, and his hips were bad......."   sorry about that"  end of story......and I get mad all over again every time I get in to this conversation........and theres more to this story I choose not to air here.......sorry but my blood boils ...and I still have him and he is a powerful boy with personality and performs his obedience better than all but one, the Korbelbach boy, and is not showing signs of any problems yet...I swam him for a year afterwards and re xray and still moderate hip dysplasia.....

Ramblin' Rose, it seems like you have an awful lot of "bad luck" in the buying and selling of dogs.

echo meadows, sorry, by "fix", i meant spay/neuter, should have been clear. i certainly wouldn't expect a breeder to take care of the surgery for someone else's dog (when they know what they are getting). we wouldn't accept anything from our breeder, as i said, the specialist felt that it was most probably due to his really fast growth, not his parents/breeding. i know there are no guarantees even w/parents w/great hips/etc. i have another question - yellowrose of texas stated that she swam her dog for a year and his dysplasia has stayed the same. is this a recommended treatment/exercise for this condition? we have a pool and i could do this regularly. any info on this i'd really appreciate. we love this pup and want to do whatever we can to make it as good as possible for him. thanks

Do Right,

this was a good post until you got off topic and started telling people to behave.  And the people you told to behave hadn't even posted on this one, except sunincc and she had an excellent and valid post.  I'm not quit sure why you went off on that topic which to me takes away from an important issue.  Oh well, I guess I'm added to the behave list now.....

Yes animules,  you are

Seriously though.  I only did it on this thread because I started this thread and felt it was mine to do with as I wished, within the confines of Oli's rules and regulations.  I could have did it on the other threads where the "stuff" was happening, or I could have started another thread strictly for that purpose.  OR, I could have just kept my big mouth shut.  I was just in a "mood", tired of EVERY subject discussed here, denegrating into a slam fest.  animules, you have a good and valid point.  I actually, kinda, in a way, did the same thing I was preaching against.  It was probably the dissapointment of the OFA results that I received that made me mad at the world for about one paragraph.  I will refrain as much as a German Irish Hillbilly can, from now on.

"1)  What would you do or what have you done, If you purchased a GSD pup for breeding or working purposes and two years later, you discover it has moderate or sever HD?"

I do prelims now so I don't find these things out at 2 years, but....... The first one had mild HD and eventually developed Spondylosis.  She was worked until it was something she didn't want to do and then lived out her life with me.  I would have never sent her back to the breeder or put her down.  The second is only 4.  I didn't buy her, she was from my first litter.  She too will live out her life with me.  I tried to find her a good home where she didn't have to share with several other dogs, but the right home was never found.  Now, I would miss her too much.

Question #3:  I have returned a couple of puppies for health and other issues.  I didn't have these pups long.   I found a home for a female that didn't mature out the way I had hoped.  But I have had others I kept for life when I couldn't find the right home.  I have also taken back dogs from my own breedings and if I could not have found the right homes they too would have lived out their lives with me.

And Do Right,

Sorry to hear about the OFA results.   That's the pits...... You deserve a rant.

I'm real sorry about your dog, DR&FNO.  I know how it feels to get that news, it's like being sucker punched.  Best laid plans don't mean jack, & it's damn disheartening.   It's ironic  how it plays out.  Well, I know you are taking heart in the fact that she's young & athletic, and I know you will do all the right things to keep her on the right track.
